Conference leader Atkins trounces Jessieville
ATKINS — Atkins led, 27-0, at halftime Friday and took a
35-0 lead in the third quarter en route to a 42-13 home victory against Jessieville.
A five-yard touchdown pass from Elijah Roberson to Trey Davis gave Atkins (6-0,
3-0 3A-4 conference) a 33-0 lead. The Arkansas Activities Association’s mercy rule went into effect after Davis ran in the 2-point conversion.
Jessieville (3-3, 1-2) got on the scoreboard with 5:38 remaining in the third quarter on a five-yard touchdown run by freshman quarterback Carson Hair.
The Red Devils extended the lead before the end of the quarter on an 18-yard score by Rylee Bowden. Tristan Wheelus kicked the point after for a 42-7 lead.
The Lions set the final with a nine-yard touchdown pass from Hair to sophomore Landen Daley.
Jessieville was balanced on offense with 126 rushing yards and 126 passing yards for 252 yards of total offense, but Atkins gained 276 yards through the air and finished with 386 total yards.
Roberson was 13-for-17 passing for 276 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions. Kennen Martin made four receptions for 108 yards and a touchdown. Davis finished with six receptions for
102 yards and two scores. Hair was 8-for-13 passing for 126 yards and the score with no interceptions. He ran
13 times, but he was held to
27 yards for an average of 2.1 yards per carry.
Junior Austin Carl led the Lions with 70 yards on 13 carries. He also caught a pass for eight yards.
Senior Cage Glisson caught two passes for 90 yards, including a 52-yard receptions. Daley’s touchdown was his only reception.
Jessieville will host the only other team undefeated in 3A-4 conference play, Glen Rose (5-1, 3-0), on Friday. The Beavers’ only loss is to Class
4A Bauxite (6-0, 3-0 4A-7). Atkins and Glen Rose are not scheduled to meet until Week
9 on Oct. 26.
Malvern winless after 4A-7 loss to Ashdown
MALVERN — A 34-point outburst in the second quarter propelled Ashdown to a
47-15 road victory Friday in a
4A-7 conference matchup with Malvern.
The Panthers (3-3, 1-2) got on the board first midway through the opening quarter. They added two more scores until the Leopards (0-6, 0-3) earned their first points with a safety early in the second quarter.
An interception returned for a touch put the Panthers ahead, 33-2, in the final four minutes of the half. Malvern responded with its only touchdown of the first half on the following drive. Ashdown scored again in the final minute to take a 40-8 lead into halftime.
Ashdown scored several minutes into the second half to take a 47-8 lead and activate the Arkansas Activities Association’s mercy rule. Malvern added a score in the last minute of the game to set the final score.
The Panthers will return home Friday to host defending Class 4A state champion Arkadelphia (1-6, 1-2). The Badgers picked up their first win of the season on Friday, 44-0, against Fountain Lake (3-3, 0-3).
Malvern has to recover for a road game Friday at Joe T. Robinson (5-1, 3-0), ranked No.
2 in 4A in the most recent Arkansas Sports Media High School Football Poll. Robinson remained undefeated in the
4A-7 Friday with a 39-25 victory over Nashville (5-1, 2-1), 3925. The Scrappers were ranked No. 3.
Poyen puts away CMS
A 21-point third quarter paced Poyen to a 42-6 conference win Friday at Cutter Morning Star.
The Indians (4-2, 1-2) scored on their opening drive on a 55-yard touchdown pass from Jacob Farmer to Dalton Wetherington. The Eagles
(1-5, 0-3) responded later in the quarter with a four-yard touchdown run by sophomore quarterback Sam Moore.
Poyen converted on a fourth down deep in Cutter Morning Star territory late in the quarter to keep a drive alive. The Indians scored with only one second remaining in the opening quarter to take a
13-6 lead into the second. Farmer threw for another touchdown to Brandon Sanchez in the second quarter. A 2-point conversion caught by Tim Edwards gave Poyen a
21-6 lead at halftime.
It was all Indians in the third quarter. Farmer threw three more touchdowns to set the final and apply the Arkansas Activities Association’s mercy rule.
Moore was 5-for-18 passing for 38 yards and an interceptions. He carried the ball
12 times for 46 yards and the score.
Junior Matthew Cook made three grabs for 24 yards and had 29 yards on four carries.. Sophomore Landon Watson had a 40-yard reception.
Junior Cameron Lockhart led the Eagles with 84 yards on 13 carries. Fellow junior Tyler Mace was 1-for-2 passing for 40 yards and ran twice for
18 yards.
Cutter Morning Star will be on the road Friday at England
(2-4, 2-1).
Mount Ida overwhelms visiting Spring Hill
MOUNT IDA — Mount Ida scored 36 points in the second quarter Friday and remained undefeated to set up the anticipated rematch with Foreman from last year’s Class 2A state championship final.
Mount Ida (6-0, 3-0 2A-7 conference) remained undefeated with a 49-0 win Friday against Spring Hill (1-4, 0-3). The Lions, ranked No. 1 in Class 2A in the most recent Arkansas Sports Media High School Football Poll, will travel to Foreman (6-0, 3-0) on Friday. The Gators are ranked No. 2 in 2A.
The Lions won, 36-7, on their home field when the two teams met a year ago in a 2A-7 conference game. The Gators had the last laugh with a 24-21 victory in December in the 2A state championship game at War Memorial Stadium.
Mount Ida jumped out to a 13-0 lead Friday on two touchdown runs by senior Jonathan LaGrange. Additional scores by seniors Gage Dyer, Cade Jackson, Luke Fiorello, Tyler Hamilton and a final score by sophomore John Hoeksema set the 49-0 halftime spread.
The Lions averaged 12.5 yards per rush with nine different ball carriers for 414 yards and seven touchdowns. Senior quarterback Jackson ran four times for 116 yards. LaGrange finished with 96 yards and two touchdowns on seven carries.
Reddies run to 4th place at Lois Davis Invitational
MAGNOLIA — Henderson State’s women’s cross country team took its largest field of the season on Friday evening, as the Reddies finished fourth out of eight teams at the Lois Davis Invitational hosted by Southern Arkansas University with a score of 131.
The Reddies jumped one spot in the team standings from last season, when the Reddies finished fifth out of seven teams at the same event.
For the second meet in a row, Samantha Nickell paced the Reddies and finished 13th individually with a time of 22:07.5.
Kaylie Wheeless was the second runner to cross the finish line for Henderson and did so in
27th place with a time of 23:34.9. A pack of Reddies rolled in moments later, as Mikayla Braun, Ashley Gore, Martha Mosqueda and Savanah Nickerson scored finishes of 35th, 39th, 40th and
41st, respectively. Southern Arkansas won the event with a score of 34, despite Grambling State claiming the first and third place runners individually.
Henderson’s next race is Friday, when the Reddies travel to Little Rock to take part in the Little Rock Invitational.
Henderson swim teams open with home wins
ARKADELPHIA — The Henderson State men’s and women’s swim teams both got their 2018-19 season off to winning starts Friday with home wins in the first meet of the season at the Duke Wells Natatorium.
The men’s team put up 122 points to edge past UT-Permian Basin, who finished with 115 points and Oklahoma Christian, who finished with 102. The women’s team scored 154 points to cruise past Oklahoma Christian’s
109 and Permian Basin’s 84. Henderson won every event except for two in the women’s competition. Eleonar Unanova claimed first place in the 200-yard individual medley, 500-yard freestyle and was the anchor leg of the 200-yard freestyle relay team with Savannah Martin, Ardyn Wilson and Elam Fulton.
Martin took first in the 50yard freestyle, while Lindsey Lucas won the 100-yard free and
200-yard free. Ceci Magnani touched the wall first in the 1000yard free.
Amy Brandenburg won the
100-yard backstroke. Elza Kachliishvili took home a victory in the
100-yard breaststroke. Both swam a leg of the 200-yard medley relay with Lucas and Wilson.
The Reddies got wins from Caleb Murders in the 200-yard free, Tom Nguyen in the 50-yard free, Nathan Bighetti in the 200yard medley and Leo Chaves in the 100-yard butterfly in the men’s competition. Bighetti also took home first place in the 100-yard backstroke, while Oscar Patten claimed victory in the 500-yard free. Nguyen, Chaves, Patten and Murders won the 200-yard free relay.
Henderson’s next meet is the Little Rock Invitational on Oct.
