Students learn art of stage design as part of ‘Nutcracker’

-

Students 10-18 years old who are interested in stage design are getting the opportunity to participate in the creation of the set for this year’s performance of “The Nutcracker” by the Hot Springs Children’s Dance Theater Company.

The Stage Design Class is a collaborative effort between Emergent Arts and the Hot Springs Children’s Dance Theatre Company, and is being underwritten by a Collaborative Project Support Grant from the Arkansas Arts Council.

Students are experiencing the process of planning, building and painting the stage set and large props. The class will conclude with the public performance of “The Nutcracker,” which will allow them to see the integration of their stage design with the dance performance, a news release said.

The class is being led by artist and teacher Sarah Riley. Tuition is $50 for the 10-week class, which is held from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Thursdays, began Sept. 6 and runs t hrough Nov. 15.

“A mystical magical winter snow falls delicately on stage, a mysterious gift box filled with life-size dancing dolls, an exploding confetti cannon. Live theater is a unique and inspiring experience. ‘The Nutcracker’ ballet has become a cherished local example. Local students with an interest in design, and special effect have recently had an opportunity to participate in a unique educational experience,” the release said.

The Hot Springs Children’s Dance Theatre Company performances of “The Nutcracker” are set for Nov. 23, 24, 30 and Dec. 1 at Lake Pointe Church. Tickets are available online at http://www.hscdtc.org.

Riley’s largest and most successful set design for the company was for the 2017 production of “Coppelia.” An art teacher in the Lake Hamilton School District, Riley is a landscape designer and visual artist. She holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Landscape Architecture and has a Master of Arts in Education. She has earned National Board Teaching Certification and was chosen Teacher of the Year for the entire Lake Hamilton School District. Her artwork and designs have been included in various shows and juried venues and she has received awards and scholarships from organizations including the American Society of Landscape Architects, Tribal Clothing Co., Garvan Woodland Gardens, and the Hot Springs Sister City Foundation, the release said.
