Benton survives Lake Hamilton upset bid

BENTON — Benton scored in all three facets on Friday to defeat Lake Hamilton.

Junior D’Anthony Harper ran for 85 yards and two touchdowns on 20 carries. Sophomore Garrett Brown was 14-for21 passing for 155 yards and one touchdown, an 11-yard score to senior Garrett Body.

Defensivel­y, senior Devin Griffin intercepte­d a pass and returned it 22 yards for a touchdown. Another senior, Kelby Caffery, returned a first-half kickoff 80 yards for another Panthers score.

The Wolves’ (5-4, 2-4

6A-West) 380 yards of total offense was not enough. Sophomore quarterbac­k Layne Warrick was 2-for-7 passing for 69 yards and a touchdown, but he was intercepte­d twice.

His touchdown was a 51-yard play to junior running back Malik Brewer, who also ran for 167 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Junior fullback Dealond Lewis added 87 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries. Sophomore Carlos Brewer was held to nine yards on three carries, losing a fumble to Benton’s defense.

Lake Hamilton was unsuccessf­ul on all four 2-point attempts.

Benton (7-2, 5-1) was ranked No. 3 in Class 6A and No. 13 overall in the most recent Arkansas Sports Media High School Football Poll.

Lake Hamilton will end the regular season on Friday at Greenwood (8-1, 6-0), ranked No. 1 in 6A and No. 4 overall. The Wolves will be the No. 6 seed from the conference in the

6A playoffs, traveling in the first round to the third seed from the

6A-East on Nov. 9.

Little Rock McClellan 44, Lakeside 7

LITTLE ROCK — Xavion Morgan and Derrick Lloyd each scored twice and Brandon Williams returned an intercepti­on for a touchdown Friday to lead Little Rock McClellan over Lakeside.

McClellan (8-1, 5-1 5A-South) converted on three 2-point conversion­s and led, 38-0, by halftime.

Lakeside (4-5, 3-3) scored its only touchdown in the third quarter on a pass play.

The Rams will close the regular season on Friday at home against rival Hot Springs (1-8,

1-5). They will be the fourth seed from the 5A-South in the playoffs, matched up in the first round with the No. 1 seed in the

5A-East.

Danville 42, Jessievill­e 14

DANVILLE — Danville raced out to a 42-7 lead by halftime and closed out a 42-14 win against Jessievill­e on Friday.

Senior quarterbac­k Preston Donnell connected with three different receivers for touchdown passes of 23, 21 and 66 yards in the first quarter. Junior Yovani Alcoer was successful on all three point-after kicks for the

21-0 lead.

Freshman quarterbac­k Carson Hair found senior Cage Glisson for a five-yard touchdown pass early in the second quarter. The extra point by Allison Quinonez made it 21-7.

Danville answered with three more scores before halftime. Senior Evan Lane scored his second touchdown on a 53yard pass play, Donnell ran in a three-yard score and the Little Johns scored on a 39-yard pass play from Donnell to senior Dalton Reagan with only 11 seconds on the clock to end the first half.

Donnell had six touchdowns in the game, completing 20 of

28 passes for 322 yards and five touchdowns. The Little Johns finished with 414 total yards.

Hair found Glisson again in the third quarter for a 12-yard touchdown with the clock running under the Arkansas Activities Associatio­n’s mercy rule. Hair finished 13-for-23 passing for 178 yards, two touchdowns and one intercepti­on.

Glisson led the receivers with seven receptions for 126 yards. Junior Joey Benson caught three passes for 30 yards.

The Lions were held to 51 yards on 27 rushing attempts, an average of just 1.9 yards per carry.

Senior Jeffrey Scott, junior Austin Carl and junior Sutton Carpenter each made eight tackles on Jessievill­e’s defense. Juniors B.J. Holloway, Dexton Hilton and Gabe Graves each made six. Scott tallied a sack and Graves caught an intercepti­on.

Jessievill­e will end its season this week at home against Mayflower (8-1, 5-1).
