Truth matters Dear editor:

Being an Independent rather than Democrat or Republican, I understand how people want to get real change in our leadership. But the current president is no leader. He may be big change but he is not uniting us. He only divides us. His core supporters may put up with his reality show tactics but at what cost?

America is made up of immigrants. They are us, people seeking a better life, pursuing happiness. The message we get from our president is to fear immigrants and not see people who risk everything, fleeing brutal, out-of-control countries. In this world, which is changing so fast, don’t blame the defenseless just because it’s easy. Immigrants are the core of what we are. The president’s solution is to demonize, to rip families apart, to separate children from parents. We need a leader who sees the big picture, a moral leader who can tell us difficult truths but also bring us together. Trust your common-sense, believe in facts, not fearmongering.

Republicans have been leaving their party and abandoning ship. There are too many to list. They even recommend voting for Democrats. Find out why.

We have a president that kowtows to authoritarian leaders. He calls the media the enemy of the people. It is no surprise then, that journalist Jamal Khashoggi, believing he can safely enter the Turkish Consulate, is met with a trap. Fifteen Saudis with a bone saw are in wait. Where’s the outrage? Do you not see how calling the press the enemy can give authoritarian leaders permission to entertain the idea that they can get away with such unspeakable, immoral actions? (One has to wonder if it is an idea our current president secretly condones and craves.)

Courage is found in great people who are willing to stand up to the powerful. Might I mention Galileo, who stood up to the powerful church and gave us a new understanding of the universe. Galileo opened our eyes. We are living in times which demand finding such truth-seeking leaders who move us forward through truths not fears.

Do you truly believe that immigrants seeking a better life are evil? Do you truly believe Democrats and the media are the enemy? Do you not believe in the #MeToo movement and helping the disadvantaged? Do you not see our president leaning toward white supremacists? Do you not believe the collaborative view of scientists who have warned us of global warming? When will we get a serious, well-informed president who can lead and not this farcical, narcissistic, entertainer? Do you really want a president who is a self-serving, pathological liar? Remember the children torn from their parents. Remember Helsinki. Remember all the president’s men already found guilty and the impending results of Mueller’s investigation. Truth matters. Vote! Vet questions Cotton Dear editor:

Senate Bill S422 was not co-sponsored by war hero Sen. Tom Cotton. I first contacted his office to find out why. They acted like I had no right to ask and ignored me. They then blocked my number, with many calls a day and weeks and recordings with no replies. I finally had my neighbor to call and it was answered. He is also a Blue Water veteran. I called back many times. I also called state offices and only got recordings. Is this the representation you want? Others have written about not responding to their calls in letters to the editor. Vets call: Tom Cotton, 202-224-2353 and find out yourselves. My cellphone number is 501-655-1174. Call me! Thank God we have Congressman Bruce Westerman, a vet’s friend.

P.S. Sen. Boozman did support Bill S422 and all veterans’ issues. Jerry Roberts Hot Springs

‘Thanks’ for railings Dear editor:

A very special thank you to Steve Anderson and the administration at Lake Hamilton for adding the rails to the aisles of the bleachers in the football stadium. They are a great help to a lot of people. Doris Qualls Hot Springs
