Fun City Chorus announces busy seasonal schedule
Fun City Chorus of Hot Springs, fresh off its very successful fall show, has a very busy schedule for the months of November and December, according to a news release
The nonprofit singing group, a member of the Barbershop Harmony Society, begins the month of November by supporting one of its members, Dedrick Johnson Jr., in the Hot Springs Kiwanis Mr. Sexy Legs of Hot Springs contest on Nov. 13.
On Nov. 15, Fun City Chorus will host the second annual Night of Gospel Music for the Soul. The free concert, featuring over 10 singing groups and soloists, is a “fantastic evening of wonderful gospel music that benefits the restoration of the John L Webb House.”
This year’s event will be held at the historic Visitors Chapel A.M.E. Church, located on Church Street next to the Hot Springs Convention Center. The concert begins at 6 p.m.
On Nov. 19, the chorus will defend its title at the Tom Daniel Holiday Chili Cook Off at Exchange Street Parking Plaza. Two years ago, the chorus finished in second place, and last year won first place in the nontraditional category. The recipe comes from the group’s musical director, Steve Spakes, who remembers the recipe from his father, Bobby Spakes, from back in the 1960s. The chorus will open the festivities with their rendition of the national anthem.
In December, the singing group begins a series of Christmas concerts and appearances in several cities and at the Bath House Dinner Theater. Included in those appearances is the lighting of the Christmas tree celebration in the Arlington Resort Hotel & Spa’s lobby on Dec. 7. The chorus also hosts the ever-popular Holiday in the Park Concert on Dec. 12 at the Hot Springs Convention Center.
The Fun City Chorus awards several thousand dollars in music scholarships each year to Garland County senior high students entering college to further their musical education. The group has awarded over $16,000 in scholarships.
