Free cooking classes to begin next week

First United Methodist Church and Growing Healthy Communities-Hot Springs will host a Cooking Matters Class from 4:30-6:30 p.m. every Tuesday beginning Nov. 13 through Dec. 18 in the church’s Christian Life Center at 1100 Central Ave.

The nutrition education program teaches students how to make more nutritious food choices on “tight budgets.” The free six class program meets once a week for two hours and gives participants the skills and confidence to prepare healthier meals for themselves and their families. Students learn how to read nutrition labels, understand bulk pricing, choose between fresh, canned or frozen produce and cook recipes that will stretch their limited food budgets, a release said.

Share Our Strength’s Cooking Matters curriculum is sponsored nationally by Walmart and is offered in Arkansas through the Arkansas Hunger Relief Alliance No Kid Hungry Campaign.
