Lakeside cannot overcome slow start against Sylvan Hills

- REBECA RECTOR

Lakeside outscored Sylvan Hills in the final quarter Thursday, but the Rams fell, 64-45, to the Bears in the Lakeside Classic at the Lakeside Athletic Complex.

Tyree Glover led the Rams in the second half, scoring 12 of his 21 points in the last two quarters. Glover took a steal in for a layup in the final minute to set the final. He grabbed three rebounds and added two steals in the game.

“They’re a very talented team and when they started making some shots, at this point in the season, we just had to stick to what we’re good at,” said Lakeside head coach Eddie Lamb.

“Looking back on it, they were making it from 24-25 feet. Our thing was to keep them pushed out which they did, but props to them. They’re a very talented team.”

The Rams trailed the Bears, 28-26, at the end of the second quarter.

“We started really well,” said Lamb. “They weren’t shooting nearly as well early in the game and our game plan was to make them make shots, but we did a really great job getting rebounds early too … one shot, one rebound and so on. We were able to control the boards pretty well.”

A.J. Winfrey buried a shot from from behind the arc early into the third quarter. With 3:30 remaining, Sawyer Lamb scored on the steal to make the score 39-33. Lamb added a trey at the buzzer to cut into the deficit again at 46-37.

“We challenged our kids to play hard and I think we played hard the whole game,” said Lamb. “Our kids never gave up.”

Ethan Eastwood tallied one steal, five rebounds, two assists with one trey. Winfrey added two from behind the arc and four rebounds.

Lamb paced the Rams with six points, five assists, eight rebounds and two steals. Patrick Davis added a pair of assists.

“It’s early and basketball goes until February,” Lamb said. “Rome wasn’t built in a day.

“We’re going to keep building on what we’re doing and our kids are going to keep playing hard. We’re never going to stop teaching kids and doing the right thing in practice. We expect to be better in the next game then even better after that.”

The Rams will close the tournament today against Mountain Pine at 12:30 p.m. at the Lakeside Athletic Complex. Sylvan Hills is scheduled to meet Jessieville at 10 a.m.
