Veterans honored at AIMM by U.S.D. 1812

The Arkansas State Society United States Daughters of 1812 (U.S.D. 1812) were among those who honored veterans at the Arkansas Inland Maritime Museum (AIMM) on Monday, Nov. 12.

U.S.D. 1812 provided and served refreshmen­ts to the approximat­e 100 people in attendance. The veterans honored were:

• Sam Morath, who served in World War II, Korean War and Vietnam War.

• James W. Woods, who served in World War II.

• Ben Maness, who served in World War II.

• Eugene L. Prohl, who served in the Korean War.

• Robert L. Atkins, who served in the Korean War.

• Thomas K. Williams, who served in the Vietnam War.

• Robert Fureigh, who served in the Vietnam War.

• Dr. Vic Snyder, who served in the Vietnam War.

• Thomas Kleck, who served in the Vietnam War. Morath is one of several who served in World War II, Korea and Vietnam. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1943 at the age of

18. He flew 31 combat missions over Germany as a gunnery. During the Korean War, he was awarded the Distinguis­hed Flying Cross for dislodging a stuck bomb with a screwdrive­r. He flew a total of

71 missions over Korea and Vietnam. Morath served for 22 years and retired in 1969. Following his military retirement, he served as a postal carrier for another 20 years. He stated, “I am proud to have served my country.”

U.S.D. 1812 is a nonprofit, women’s organizati­on whose members are lineal descendant­s of ancestors who gave civil or military service between 1784 and 1815.
