Oaklawn Foundation announces online applications for scholarships

- FROM STAFF REPORTS

The Oaklawn Foundation will begin accepting online applications on Jan. 2, 2019, for Garland County residents who desire to pursue higher education.

The scholarships are administered by Hot Springs Area Community Foundation and available each spring for residents of Garland County pursuing higher education. The application process can only be done online, a news release said.

The scholarships, ranging from $3,000 to $5,000 each, are available to any eligible Garland County resident who is, or will be, enrolled at an accredited community college, technical school or four-year public or private college or university (including graduate or postgraduate level studies).

“This is the only program that offers scholarships to vocational education, two and four-year colleges and universities, master’s and Ph.D. programs,” Kerry Lockwood-Owen, Oaklawn Foundation Scholarship Chair, said in the release. “This makes the Oaklawn Foundation Scholarship one-of-a-kind in the state of Arkansas.”

The application is available through the Arkansas Community Foundation’s online application portal at www.arcf.org/oaklawnscholarship.

Applicants will need to provide information about their financial need, educational history and community/extracurricular involvement.

Applicants will need to upload a personal essay describing their educational plan, goals and personal story, two letters of recommendation, both dated after June 1, 2018, and a copy of their transcript or GED certificate.

Interested individuals must submit the online form and all application materials by Feb. 28, 2019, in order to be considered a candidate for the award.

“It is a joy to know that more than 700 Garland County students have been awarded scholarships since our inception. Our goal is for each recipient to be able to fulfill the amazing potential he or she has with the gift of education,” said Lockwood-Owen.

The Foundation has donated more than $2 million since 2007 according to the release, and uses the money generated from the Oaklawn Gaming Center to fund programs and scholarships.
