Lampo leads Harding with career-high 29 points

LAWTON, Okla. — Harding sophomore Kellie Lampo scored a career-high

29 points, and the Lady Bisons held one of the top 3-point shooting teams in Division II to a season-low eight 3s in an

87-73 victory over Cameron on Saturday in non-conference play at Aggie Gym.

Harding improved to 4-1 with the victory, coming in its first true road game this season. Cameron, a member of the Lone Star Conference, fell to 2-4 and lost its second straight to a Great American Conference opponent. Cameron lost,

98-73, to Southweste­rn Oklahoma on Wednesday in Weatherfor­d.

Lampo, of Jessievill­e, made 11 of 16 shots from the field and 7 of 11 at the free-throw line to top her previous best of 26 points last season at Oklahoma Baptist. She added a team-high 11 rebounds.

Cameron entered the game ranked No. 3 in Division II with 12 3-pointers made per game. Harding held Cameron to only 1-for-13 on 3-pointers in the first half, and limited the Aggies to only 8-for28, 29 percent, for the game. Cameron had at least 10 3-pointers in each of its first five games this season.

Harding shot 50 percent or better in each of the four quarter and 52.3 percent,

34 of 65, for the game.

Junior transfer Cheyenne Brown made 8 of 12 shots and scored a season-high 16 points. Carissa Caples scored eight of her 13 points in the first quarter, and Kennedy Cooper added 10.

Parfitt McNair led Cameron with 25 points, making 9 of 18 shots and grabbing a team-high eight rebounds.

Harding scored the first points of the game on its first possession and led the entire game. Its largest lead came with

3:32 left in the second quarter and the Lady Bisons ahead 41-17.

Harding’s next game is Thursday, when the Lady Bisons open their GAC schedule against Arkansas-Monticello

(0-3). Tip-off at the Rhodes-Reaves Field House is 5:30 p.m.

Reddie men win with five in double figures

ARKADELPHI­A — Five players scored in double figures on Saturday afternoon as Henderson State rolled past Hannibal-LaGrange, 83-62, at the Duke Wells Center.

The Reddies (4-1) were led in scoring by Rel Johnson, who finished with 16 points, six rebounds and three assists in the win. Chris Parker, Eric Dailey, and Kyle Murphy each had 12 points, while Jeremiah Toney chipped in 10.

Henderson got off to a fast start early and used two 3-pointers from Parker and one from Murphy to go in front, 23-7, in the first eight minutes of action. The Reddies opened up a lead of as many as 20 points on three separate occasions in the first half as they coasted to a 43-26 halftime advantage.

The Trojans (0-6) used a 13-3 run in the first seven minutes of the half to trim the lead down to just 48-39 with 12:39 to go. With Hannibal-LaGrange within striking distance, it was Johnson who gave the Reddies the boost they needed to pull away.

Johnson scored eight straight points on two 3-pointers and two free throws over the next two minutes to push the lead back out to 56-39. The Trojans never threatened again, as the Reddies eventually opened up a lead of as many as 27 points before closing it out, 83-62.

Henderson won the rebounding battle for the fifth straight game, outrebound­ing the Trojans, 38-28. The Reddies also had 32 bench points in the win and held Hannibal-LaGrange to just 35.5-percent shooting in the second half.

The Reddies will face their first Great American Conference opponent of the year on Thursday when they travel to Magnolia to take on Southern Arkansas (4-1) at 7:30 p.m.

Cobras pull away past Parkers Chapel in Magnet Cove tourney

MAGNET COVE — Fountain Lake outscored Parkers Chapel, 17-10, in the fourth quarter of their first-round matchup in the boys’ bracket of the Battle at the Cove tournament at Magnet Cove on Saturday to take a 55-44 victory.

Fountain Lake (5-1) led throughout the game. The Cobras maintained a three-point edge after the first quarter,

18-15, and after the second quarter, 27-24, before taking a 38-34 lead into the final quarter against the Trojans (0-3).

Senior Joe Murphy led the Cobras with 21 points. Fellow senior Jordan Mungle scored 13 points.

Fountain Lake is next scheduled to play on Tuesday at Malvern (1-2). The Cobras will meet Cutter Morning Star in the second round of the tournament on Thursday.

The Eagles defeated Ouachita (7-4),

68-61, in the opening round on Saturday. The Warriors and the Trojans will play at 5:50 p.m. on Thursday. Fountain Lake and Cutter Morning Star are scheduled for 8:30 p.m.

Girls

Parkers Chapel outscored Fountain Lake in the fourth quarter Saturday, but Fountain Lake survived to advance to the semifinal round of Magnet Cove’s Battle at the Cove tournament.

Fountain Lake (2-4) was led by 16 points from sophomore Presley Hamric.

The Lady Cobras are next scheduled to play on Tuesday at Malvern (05). Their next game at Magnet Cove is Thursday against Ouachita (11-2).

Ouachita also won in the first round of the tournament on Saturday, 34-17, over Cutter Morning Star (0-6).

Cutter Morning Star and Parkers Chapel will play at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. Fountain Lake and Ouachita are scheduled for 7:10 p.m.

Ouachita won, 43-38, at Fountain Lake on Monday.

Jackson has 21 to help Pine Bluff beat Little Rock

LITTLE ROCK — Charles Jackson drilled six from distance to total 21 points and help Arkansas-Pine Bluff knock off Little Rock 75-66 in the Las Vegas Holiday Invitation­al campus game on Saturday.

Martaveiou­s McKnight scored 20 points while dishing out eight assists and Shaun Doss added 18 points as Pine Bluff

(2-4) garnered its second straight win after starting the season 0-4.

The Golden Lions took control early, leading 38-31 at the break. Little Rock (33) remained close until Charles Jackson drilled a 3 and McKnight made three straight free throws for a 63-51 advantage at the 9:05 mark. Christian Robertson followed with two straight layups to push the lead to 67-51.

Nikola Maric had 20 points and 12 rebounds to lead Little Rock (3-3). Kris Bankston added 12 points with nine boards and Markquis Nowell contribute­d 13 points.

Pine Bluff hit 10 of 28 from beyond the arc while the Trojans were just 4 of 19.

The Golden Lions will be on the road again Tuesday at 6 p.m. against Cincinnati (4-1). Little Rock will visit the Farris Center on Wednesday at 7 p.m. against Central Arkansas (2-4).

Tigers survive late run by Lions

FORT SMITH — Ouachita Baptist’s basketball team survived a 21-12 run over the final four minutes of play Friday evening to escape with a 77-72 victory over the Arkansas-Fort Smith in the Lion’s Thanksgivi­ng Classic tournament.

Five Tigers scored in double figures as senior guard Mahlon Martin once again led the team in scoring with

15 points. Fellow guards Trey Harris and Kendarious Smith added 12 points apiece. Eric Brown contribute­d 11 points and Wesley Franklin added 10.

Ouachita (2-1) shot 57 percent from the field in the first half and built a double-digit lead in the process. The Tigers defense shut down the Lions (3-3) in first half, holding Fort Smith to just 26 percent shooting in the opening frame.

David Ward and Chris Crawford carried the Lions offensivel­y as the only two Fort Smith players to reach double-digit points. Ward finished with a game-high

29 points, while Crawford contribute­d

24 points.

The game remained tight throughout the opening half. Ouachita was able to break away toward the end of the half with a 7-2 run over the final 3:20.

The Tigers went on a 25-9 run in the opening 10 minutes of the second half to take a 52-35 lead. A dunk by Franklin on a fast break seemed to put an exclamatio­n point on the lead as the visitors took a 20-point lead.

The Lions stuck around and slowly chipped away at the lead. Ward stepped to the free throw line with a chance to tie the game with 26 seconds left in the game, but he missed both.

The Tigers iced the game with free throws of their own.

Ouachita played against in the tournament Saturday against Midwestern State (3-3). The Tigers will return home on Thursday to host Arkansas Tech (2-2) at Bill Vining Arena for the first Great American Conference game of the season for both teams.

Dominant 4th quarter leads to win for Arkansas women

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — A 27-point fourth quarter lifted the Arkansas women’s basketball team to a 79-55 win over Tennessee State on Friday at the Challenge in the Music City.

Redshirt sophomore Chelsea Dungee was 2-for-2 from the field and 5-for-7 from the line for nine points in the final

10 minutes of the game as the Razorbacks

(3-1) outscored the Lady Tigers (0-6), 277, breaking open a close contest. Dungee finished with a team-best 16 points and was one of four Razorbacks in double figures.

Arkansas did not score for the first two minutes, spotting the Lady Tigers a

5-0 lead. Dungee tallied the first points for the Razorbacks, sparking a 22-7 run and allowing Arkansas to take a 22-12 lead after the first quarter.

Malica Monk had eight points and Alexis Tolefree six points in the first frame. The duo finished with 13 and 14 points, respective­ly.

The Razorbacks struggled in the second quarter, committing nine fouls and going just 4-for-16 from the floor. Tennessee State made nine free throws and hit three 3-point field goals to erase the

10-point lead.

Bailey Zimmerman kept Arkansas close with eight second-quarter points, but the Lady Tigers drained a final

3-pointer at the buzzer. The Razorbacks clung to a 37-34 advantage at the break.

As the fouls mounted, Arkansas went to the bench and got a big spark from sophomore Macy Weaver in the third quarter. She grabbed two quick rebounds and helped Arkansas build the lead to as much as seven points in the final three minutes of the period.

That momentum sparked a 33-10 run to close out the final 13 minutes of the game. Arkansas held the Lady Tigers to 14.3-percent shooting in the fourth quarter.

Arkansas met Pittsburgh (2-4) on Saturday night in the second day of the tournament. The Razorbacks will close the tournament today with Wisconsin

(6-0) at 7:30 p.m.
