Lady Warhawks too much for Lady Lions

- JAMES LEIGH

HASKELL — Mt. Vernon-Enola jumped out to an early lead and never relented as the Lady Warhawks downed the Jessieville Lady Lions, 57-20, in the first round of the Bill Gibbs Memorial Tournament at Daniel Henley Fieldhouse Monday night.

“We played well,” said Mt. Vernon-Enola head coach Adam Carlton. “It’s always interesting to see what happens after you come back after Thanksgiving break.

“You give the kids four or five days off — of course, we start in October, so they probably needed those four or five days off. We’ve had a tough conference road already.”

After shooting just 28.6 percent from the field in the first half, Jessieville could not make up the difference after their 18-8 deficit grew to 26-15 at the break.

“We couldn’t really get anything going on offense,” said Jessieville head coach Magen Scrivner. “I feel like our defense helps us get going. I just felt like we weren’t rotating very well on defense. I think that was kind of a lack of getting back in our offense.”

The Lady Lions struggled to make a shot in the second half, putting up just five points in the final 16 minutes of the game for an overall shooting percentage of 19 percent.

The Lady Warhawks dominated the third quarter, putting up 21 points to roll to a 47-16 lead before letting the bench finish the game.

“The way I look at it, it’s not a conference game,” Scrivner said. “We’ve got to get all the kinks worked out before next week.”

Gracie Raby led the Lady Warhawks with 19 points. Kenlie Raby added 10.

“She plays well. Her and Alaina (Ellis) and Taylor (Keathley), our senior leaders, they go out there and play hard. She always plays well. She had a tough game here the other day, but she’s kind of come back and got over that.”

Taryn Anderson led the Lady Lions with seven points while grabbing four rebounds, and Lilliana Fehrenbacher and Amy De Haas both added four. Fehrenbacher had three rebounds with a pair of steals while De Haas had four boards and two assists.

Jessieville will face the loser of the Atkins-Mountain Pine game Wednesday at 4 p.m. Mt. Vernon-Enola will face the winner of the game Thursday at 4 p.m.
