Home invasion suspect charged after release from hospital

- STEVEN MROSS

A reportedly homeless man who was shot Sunday morning after allegedly forcing his way into a residence in an apparent robbery attempt was arrested on multiple felony charges Thursday after being released from a local hospital.

Darryl Lavell Williams, 24, a convicted felon who lists an address of city streets, was booked into the Garland County Detention Center shortly before 2:30 p.m. Thursday on charges of aggravated residential burglary, punishable by up to life in prison, criminal attempt at aggravated robbery, punishable by up to 30 years, possession of a firearm by certain persons, punishable by up to 20 years, and four counts of aggravated assault, punishable by up to six years.

Williams was being held on zero bond and will likely appear today in Garland County District Court.

According to a news release from Hot Springs police, on Sunday, officers responded to a shooting at 405 Alcorn St., Apt. 5, and made contact with a resident who stated that an unknown male had entered the apartment with a gun. The suspect, later identified as Williams, was shot once by the resident and was transported to a local hospital to be treated.

On Thursday, Williams was released from the hospital and subsequently arrested on the felony charges, it said.

According to the affidavit for a search warrant

for Williams’ vehicle, a red 2010 Ford Escape, officers responded to the Alcorn residence at

8:47 a.m. and arrived to find Williams on the floor inside the apartment with a serious gunshot wound.

The resident stated Williams had just entered the residence armed with a rifle and was pointing it at four children, ages

8, 5, 4 and 3, who were asleep in the living room. The resident was able to get his shotgun without Williams seeing him and fired one round, striking Williams in the upper chest/ neck area while he was still in the living room.

Williams fell to the floor and the resident got the rifle away from him. He then got his girlfriend and the children out of the apartment and called police, the affidavit states.

While waiting on police to arrive, Williams reportedly told the resident he was at the wrong house and he had been sent to collect money owed to another person. He said he drove there in the Escape which was parked in the driveway and there was a female with him. The female was not located.

A computer check revealed an unauthorized use of a vehicle complaint had been filed regarding the Escape on Saturday. Officers located a .22-caliber rifle with the butt stock removed in the front room adjacent to where Williams was located and the resident identified it as the weapon Williams had brandished when he came in.

According to court documents, Williams pleaded guilty on Sept. 10, 2018, to a felony charge of theft by receiving over $1,000 and was sentenced to six years supervised probation. On Nov. 19, a probation violation report was filed alleging Williams had tested positive for amphetamines and marijuana on Oct. 3, had missed a scheduled visit with his probation officer on Oct. 1, was not living at the residence he listed as his address, and had failed to make payments toward his fines and court costs. A warrant for his arrest was issued the next day.
