Kidnapping report leads to arrests for drugs, guns

- STEVEN MROSS

What a passer-by thought was a kidnapping led to the arrest of a local man and woman on multiple felony charges involving a stolen gun and drugs Sunday afternoon.

Demetrius Lamar Holmes, 19, of 307 Lakeshore Drive, and Jessica

Lee Brown, 29, who lists a Leeper Street address, were both taken into custody outside Holmes’ residence and each charged with simultaneous possession of drugs and firearms, punishable by up to life in prison, theft by receiving of a firearm, possession of marijuana with purpose to deliver, possession of a controlled substance, Xanax, with purpose to deliver, and possession of drug paraphernalia, each punishable by up to six years in prison.

Holmes, a convicted felon, was also charged with a felony count of possession of a firearm by certain persons, punishable by up to six years. Both were being held on zero bond and appeared Monday in Garland County District Court.

According to the probable cause affidavit, shortly after 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Hot Springs police Officer 1st Class Brent Scrimshire and Officer Shawn Stone responded to the 307 Lakeshore residence regarding a possible kidnapping. A female caller stated she saw a black male driving a black 2006 Infiniti

who forced a white female into his car and began hitting her in the 100 block of Lakeshore. The caller said she followed the vehicle to 307 Lakeshore and called police.

Stone made contact with the caller who described the black male and noted he had taken the female inside the residence. Stone approached the house and noted there was a black Infiniti parked outside, still running. As he got closer, a man, identified as Holmes, stepped out into the carport. Moments later, a woman, identified as Holmes, also stepped out.

Scrimshire asked Holmes what happened and he stated his brother was the one driving the Infiniti and that he was inside with his girlfriend. Scrimshire and Sgt. LeeAnn Zaner entered the residence and made contact with Holmes’ brother outside his bedroom door. He was wearing only shorts and appeared to have been asleep.

The brother said Holmes had been driving the car and that his girlfriend was asleep in their bed. Scrimshire checked and confirmed the brother’s girlfriend and an infant were sleeping in a bed in his bedroom.

As he left the residence, Scrimshire said he saw a pill bottle in Brown’s name beside the driver’s door of the Infiniti which was found to contain a powered substance later determined to be crushed Xanax pills, approximately 2.9 grams.

Zaner noted Holmes’ brother came outside and walked to the passenger door of the Infiniti and tried to open it despite Zaner telling him to back away. He got the door ajar and Zaner “immediately detected an odor of marijuana” coming from the vehicle. She also saw a firearm in the front driver’s seat.

Zaner opened the door and secured the firearm, a loaded 9-mm with an extended magazine. The vehicle was searched further and a bag containing 26.9 grams of marijuana was found in the center console along with a digital scale. A marijuana cigarette was also allegedly found on the ground next to the vehicle.

The affidavit notes Holmes was convicted of felony fleeing on Aug. 18. A check on the gun determined it had been reported stolen out of Little Rock on Oct. 4.

The female caller was brought back to the scene and she reportedly identified Holmes and Brown as the man and woman she had seen earlier and followed to the residence.
