UW remembers Wallace through volunteer award

- BETH REED

United Way of the Ouachitas honored the memory of dedicated volunteer Terry Wallace by awarding a special volunteer service award at its annual meeting on Thursday.

Paul Nothern was given the Terry Wallace Volunteer Award for his demonstrated exemplary service to the organization, according to Sarah Fowler, executive director of the organization.

During the meeting, Fowler noted the award was created and named after Wallace, “an exemplary, creative and dedicated individual and United Way would only present the award to an individual of the like.”

“The individual of this award is one of this community’s great volunteers and is a true friend of the United Way of the Ouachitas,” she told those in attendance.

“With their insight and hard work creating a golf tournament to benefit United Way in 2016 and continually driven to make each year better than the year before. With a heart for community service it is my pleasure to present The Terry Wallace Volunteer Award to Paul Nothern.”

Fowler told The Sentinel-Record that Wallace, who died Dec. 6, was honored with a community volunteer service award in 2017.

“We honored him last year with this award at the Hotel Hot Springs and we did that first, because he’s always been a huge volunteer throughout the community, but second because he’s been such an exemplary volunteer for the United Way,” she said. “He’s done so much for us over the years from serving on the United Way board for several years to coming up with our annual Garland County’s Got Talent show.”

She said the organization was hoping he would be able to attend the annual meeting, though he did attend the 2018 Garland County’s Got Talent event in March.

Nothern, she said, exudes the same spirit as Wallace in all he has done for the organization and the community. The award, she added, will not necessarily be given annually, but only when a volunteer shows that same spirit.
