Guinn, Huell nominated for weekly GAC awards

RUSSELLVIL­LE — The Great American Conference office announced on Monday this week’s nomination­s, including Southern Arkansas freshman guard Ariana Guinn and Ouachita Baptist senior Alivia Huell, for the its basketball awards.

Guinn, of Hot Springs, was nominated after going 7-for-14 from the floor for 16 points in a 74-52 loss for Southern Arkansas (1-7, 0-4) against Arkansas Tech (5-4, 2-2) in Russellvil­le. She is her team’s leading scorer and tied for 16th in the league at 12.7 points in six games, missing several games so far due to injury.

Huell, of Malvern, led Ouachita (4-5,

2-2) with nine points and four steals in a

66-45 home loss to Harding (7-2, 3-1). She is Ouachita’s leading scorer this season and ranks 14th in the conference at 12.9 points per game.

Ouachita is scheduled to close the semester today at Rogers State (5-6) in Claremore, Okla. The Tigers are next scheduled to play on Jan. 3 on the road against Southern Nazarene (2-7, 1-3).

Southern Arkansas is scheduled for a pair of home games before the end of the year. The Lady Muleriders will host Williams Baptist College (5-4) on Wednesday at 2 p.m. and Mississipp­i College (3-5) on Dec. 31 at 2 p.m.

The GAC Women’s Basketball Player of the Week is Southern Nazarene junior guard Irene Perez. Also receiving nomination­s were Arkansas Tech guard Hannah Villines, Harding guard Carissa Caples and Southeaste­rn Oklahoma State guard Katie Webb.

Ouachita senior guard Mahlon Martin, out of Episcopal Collegiate in Little Rock, was nominated for the men’s award after scoring 15 points with six rebounds and four assists in an 86-84 home loss on Saturday for the Tigers (4-4, 1-3) against Harding (5-4, 3-1). The team is next scheduled to play on Jan. 3 in Bethany, Okla., against Southern Nazarene (9-2, 3-1).

The GAC Men’s Basketball Player of the Week is Oklahoma Baptist senior guard Davion Turner. Also nominated were Arkansas Tech guard R.J. Glasper, harding guard Romen Martin, Southeaste­rn forward Kevin Buckingham, Southern Arkansas forward Wesley Nosakhare and Southern Nazarene center Noah Starkey.
