Spring football game slated for ESPNU broadcast

- FROM STAFF REPORTS

FAYETTEVILLE — Arkansas’ annual Red-White spring football game has been scheduled for a 3 p.m. kickoff on April 6 at Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium.

The game will air live on ESPNU and will also be streamed on ESPN.com and the ESPN app. It marks the fourth straight year ESPN has elected to carry the Razorbacks’ scrimmage as part of the network’s spring football coverage.

Admission to the game is free and open to the public.

Last year’s spring game was held at War Memorial Stadium in Little Rock during renovations to Razorback Stadium as part of a new agreement to alternate home games against Missouri and spring games. The Razorbacks will meet the Tigers in November at War Memorial Stadium, which will also host the 2020 spring game, but no Little Rock game is currently scheduled for the 2020 season.

The 2019 campaign will mark the second season for head coach Chad Morris in Fayetteville. The Razorbacks were 0-8 in the Southeastern Conference in 2018 and 2-10 overall. It was the first 10-loss season in program history.

Team reschedules student tryouts

FAYETTEVILLE — Arkansas’ football program has rescheduled a one-day tryout for university students.

The tryout of students enrolled at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville was previously scheduled for Feb. 26. The tryout is now scheduled for March 5 at the Fred W. Smith Football Center and only remains open to full-time students at the Fayetteville campus.

Check-in and registration is scheduled for 4:30-5:30 p.m. Tryout participants must complete their own forms and must have prior football experience in high school or college.

TULSA, Okla. — Arkansas sophomore Tatum Rice gave the Razorbacks’ women’s tennis team its only points in a 4-1 loss on Saturday at Tulsa.

The Razorbacks (7-2) dropped the doubles point in straight sets with the Golden (7-4) Hurricane clinching at the No. 2 position. Rice, of Lakeside, and teammate Martina Zerulo fell, 6-2, to the No. 10-ranked team of Martina Okalova and Vera Ploner at the No. 1 position.

Tulsa got within one win for the clinch before Rice earned Arkansas’ lone point of the match. She earned a 6-1, 2-6, 6-2 victory at the No. 2 position against Martha Matoula.

The Golden Hurricane then won the No. 5 singles match for the victory.

It was a second straight loss for the Razorbacks after the team moved to 7-0 with a 4-3 victory at the George M. Billingsley Tennis Center in Fayetteville against previously No. 9-ranked Oklahoma State (4-5).

Arkansas has a week off until a road trip to Los Angeles on Saturday to face Loyola Marymount (1-3).

Razorbacks put three players on Golden Spikes watch list

FAYETTEVILLE — Arkansas sophomore right fielder Heston Kjerstad, sophomore shortstop Casey Martin and junior reliever Matt Cronin were recently named among 55 players to the 2019 USA Baseball Golden Spikes Award watch list.

The award is presented each year to the top amateur player in the country. Philip Stidham was the first Razorback to be named a finalist for the award.

Former Razorback Andrew Benintendi won the 38th Golden Spikes award four years ago. Benintendi is now the starting left fielder for the reigning World Series champion Boston Red Sox.

Kjerstad, Martin and Cronin were each recently named to the Preseason All-Southeastern Conference First Team, as well as junior center fielder Dominic Fletcher.

Arkansas led all teams with three selections. Auburn, Baylor, Elon, Florida, Florida State, N.C. State, Oregon State, Stanford and UCLA each boast a pair of athletes represented.

The SEC also led the way with 13 representatives. The Pac-12 Conference garnered 10 selections, the Atlantic Coast Conference claims nine and the Big 12 Conference has five.

USA Baseball will announce the finalists on May 29. Fan voting will open at GoldenSpikesAward.com concurrently and will remain open through June 10.

The winner of the 42nd Golden Spikes Award will be named on June 14.

The reigning College World Series national runner-up Razorbacks are scheduled to open their season on Friday against Eastern Illinois at the newly renamed Baum–Walker Stadium at George Cole Field.
