Local artist featured in ‘Part to Whole’ exhibit
LITTLE ROCK — The Galleries at Library Square located in the Roberts Library and Butler Center for Arkansas Studies will host an exhibit featuring the work of six artists, including Dolores Justus of Hot Springs, March 8 through June 29.
“Part to Whole: The Making of Art, the Artist, and the Artist Group” will also showcase a curated selection of work by Mia Hall, Robyn Horn, Barbara Satterfield, Sandra Sell and Elizabeth Weber. The six make up a professional art group that has been meeting since 2016, according to a news release.
Art consultant Rachel Golden served as the curator and essayist for the exhibition, that was more than a year in the planning. “Part to Whole” will open with a reception from 5-8 p.m. Friday, March 8, and will feature an informal artist talk from 2-4 p.m. on Saturday, March 9.
“Natural themes and visual elements play a key role in the paintings and sculpture exhibited by Dolores Justus. Reflecting the artist’s affinity for and observations of the natural world, Justus’ expressive paintings strike a chord between the familiar and new. Her oil on paper studies demonstrate a sense of immediacy and an interest in simplified forms and color,” the release said.

The exhibiting artists work in different media and in a variety of styles to explore independent themes, but a basic similarity among them is identified by group member Hall as quoted in the exhibit catalog.
“We are all makers, and we all practice skilled making — whatever material it is. And for us, skill is equally important to concept. … We all really value the skill each person demonstrates in the work,” she said.
