Larry Clowers

Dr. Larry Clowers, 79, died on June 27, 2019, in his hometown of Hot Springs, Ark.

He was the son of the late Don and Mary Clowers. A brother, Richard Clowers, predeceased him. Dr. Clowers was also preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Catherine M. Clowers, who died Jan. 28, 2017.

He is survived by two daughters, Dr. Marsha Clowers, of New York City, and Dr. Holly Clowers and her husband, Dr. Richard Oberg, of Jackson, Tenn.; a brother, Jim Clowers and his wife, Linda, of Hot Springs; a sister, Deborah York and her husband, Wayne, of Albuquerque, N.M.; and a sister-in-law, Patricia Clowers, of Hot Springs.

After graduating from Hot Springs High School, Larry enlisted in the United States Air Force. One of his duty assignments was at the airbase in Walnut Ridge, Ark. He and Cathy met during that period of time, and he started taking courses at what is now Williams Baptist University.

After his honorable discharge, he completed his undergraduate degree at Arkansas State University, and then he and Cathy moved to New Orleans, where he completed his doctoral studies at Tulane University.

Larry then joined the faculty at ASU as a professor of sociology. He left briefly to teach at Southern Arkansas University in Magnolia, then returned to ASU where he retired in 2000. After his retirement, he and Cathy moved to Hot Springs Village. Shortly thereafter, Larry returned to the classroom and taught parttime for a number of years at the National Park College.

A private service will be scheduled at a later date, at which time he will join Cathy in the Memorial Garden of The Kirk in The Pines. Smith Family Funeral Home of Benton is in charge of arrangements.
