Ballroom Boogie Showcase set for Sunday

The 2019 Ballroom Boogie Showcase dinner and dance fundraiser will be held from 4-8 p.m. Sunday at the Barrett Center, 2231 E. Grand Ave.

The event includes dinner, a dance showcase and a silent auction. Admission is $25 per person, and $10 for children 12 and younger. All proceeds will go to The Caring Place.

Library board of directors to meet Monday

The Garland County Library Board of Directors will meet at the Garland County Library, 1427 Malvern Ave., at noon Monday.

Patrons who want to address concerns with the board must obtain a request form at the library’s circulatio­n desk.

Diamonds in the Rough set for July 27

The Second Annual Diamonds in the Rough Girls Empowermen­t Conference will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, July 27, at Ouachita Behavioral Health & Wellness, 125 Wellness Way.

Diamonds in the Rough founder Esther Dixon, Justice of the Peace for District 3, said in a news release that she wanted to provide the conference free for girls 12-18 years old, so there weren’t any obstacles that prevented them from attending.

“Her goal of the conference is to equip the young ladies with the necessary tools and resources that will help them navigate through various transition­s they may face in life,” the release said.

The theme of the conference is “Dare to Dream Big,” and is meant to “Challenge, Empower, and Inspire the young ladies to strive to set goals and to pursue their dreams, so they can reach their highest potential.”

The keynote speaker will be state Rep. Jamie Scott, District 37, the youngest African-American female elected to the Legislatur­e. The conference will also include 2019 Miss UAPB Angelica Perkins, who is also the 2019 Ebony Magazine Campus Queen; Bobbie Brooks, Ph.D., Human Services; Kai Coggin, a poet, author, and teaching artist; Karla Gentry, a licensed counselor; and Erin Holliday, executive director of Emergent Arts and District 1 city director.

The conference will also feature a special Makeup Demonstrat­ion by Lasonia Broadway, owner of Timeless Tiffany’s Beauty, and a Back to School Fashion Show by Yolanda Hunter, owner of Thirtyone2­5 Fashions.

The event will be presented by Diamonds in the Rough of Hot Springs in partnershi­p with Arkansas Region 8 Prevention, Arkansas Martin Luther King Jr. Commission, and Ouachita Behavioral Health & Wellness.

VFW Post 2278 to meet Saturday

VFW Post 2278 will hold its monthly meeting at 1 p.m. Saturday at Rumors Bar and Grill, located in Boardwalk Village.

Members and the Auxiliary are welcome to get updates at matters at hand, and express their views.
