Hot Springs students named to Who’s Who Among Students in American Universiti­es and Colleges list

ARKADELPHI­A —Thirty-three students from Ouachita Baptist University will be included in the latest edition of Who’s Who Among Students in American Universiti­es and Colleges, including three Hot Springs students.

Joey Dean, 22, is a biology major from Hot Springs. According to a news release, Dean is a graduate of Lakeside High School, has been named to Ouachita’s President’s List, is a member of Beta Beta men’s social club, Tri Beta biological honor society and the American Chemical Society. He has worked as an undergradu­ate researcher with Arkansas Children’s Research Institute and the National Science Foundation’s Research Experience for Undergradu­ates program, specifical­ly with Purdue University’s Department of Biochemist­ry. Dean also has served as a Super Summer Arkansas college leader, youth worship volunteer at First Baptist Church of Hot Springs, and has volunteere­d with Ouachita’s Tiger Serve Day. Dean plans to attend the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock this fall to pursue a career in pediatric surgery.

Lauren Lovelady, 21, is a finance major from Hot Springs. According to the release, Lovelady is a graduate of Lakeside High School and was named to Ouachita’s President’s List. She is a member of Tri Chi women’s social club where she served as treasurer, Women in Business where she served as an executive member and Alpha Chi national college honor society where she served as president and as a co-leader for the collaborat­ive research team. Lovelady also has served on Ouachita’s Hickingbot­ham Student Advisory Board and Ary Student Investment Fund team as the energy analyst. She is a national first-place winner with both the Alpha Chi collaborat­ive research team and Ouachita’s Ary Fund. She has volunteere­d with First United Methodist Church in Arkadelphi­a as a children’s leader, on the Episcopacy

Committee to the bishop of Arkansas and as a Global Young People’s Convocatio­n delegate. Lovelady plans to work for the Simmons Bank Corporate Office in Little Rock in the management rotation program.

Austin Sowerbutts, 22, is a finance major from Hot Springs. According to the release, Sowerbutts is a graduate of Logos Homeschool Co-op, and was named to Ouachita’s President’s and Dean’s Lists. He is a member of the Carl Goodson Honors Program, Eta Alpha Omega men’s social club and beau for Tri Chi women’s social club. Sowerbutts has served as a men’s disciplesh­ip leader for Campus Ministries, as a university photograph­er and videograph­er and as a stage manager for Ouachita’s One-Act Play Festival. He has volunteere­d with Ouachita’s Tiger Serve Day and with Crossgate Church as a praise team member and youth small group leader and video/technical support. Sowerbutts also traveled to China on a volunteer trip with Campus Ministries and participat­ed in the OBU Business Plan Competitio­n. He has worked as a camp counselor for Pine Cove, physical therapy technician for Village Golf and Physical Therapy, operations manager for StrongTowe­r Wealth Management as well as photograph­er and videograph­er for Lightglass Photograph­y. Sowerbutts also launched a food delivery startup in Arkadelphi­a called NiteBite. Sowerbutts plans to move to Fayettevil­le and pursue a career as a fiduciary financial advisor.

The students were chosen by OBU’s faculty, staff and the 2019 senior class based on their academic performanc­e, leadership in extracurri­cular activities, community service and potential for success, the release said.
