- FROM STAFF REPORTS

EL DORADO — Lakeside claimed top honors at the 24th Simmons Bank Wildcat Invitational Golf Tournament Monday at El Dorado Country Club as freshman Maggie Huett and junior Wil Griffin earned medalist honors.

The freshman shot a 78 to lead the defending Class 5A state champion Lady Rams to also take the team title with a team card of 252. Junior AbbyLea Huett turned in an 84 for the second-highest girls round with Brooke Borland completing the team’s card with a 90.

“I’m excited to see the great things she does this season,” coach Kirsten Garner said of the younger Huett.

The elder Huett, senior Riley Langston and sophomore Elizabeth Kalinowsky return from last year’s state championship team.

“The team is going to have a great season,” Garner said. “If this was any indicator of how the year is going to go, then I’m very excited for what they do.”

El Dorado finished second in the girls match with a 296, and Sheridan shot a 317 for third.

Griffin won the boys individual title after a playoff. Griffin shot a 69, tying with Bryant’s Andrew Gaspard to force the playoff. Griffin then hit a birdie on No. 1 to secure the win.

Lakeside brought just three boys, so it was not in the team competition. Senior Carson Garner, who is Kirsten’s younger brother, shot a 74 for the fourth-lowest round of the day while freshman Graham Dolan carded an 89 on the day.

Bryant won the boys match with a 298, El Dorado was second with a 342 and Sylvan Hills turned in a team card of 449 for third.

Garner said that the heat did take its toll on all the players.

“The heat affected not just us, but other teams as well,” she said. “We had a few kids get sick out there, but we’re taking precautions to hydrate and eat throughout the day.”

This is Garner’s first year coaching the team, having played all four years for Lakeside before playing at Arkansas State University.

Lakeside will host Nashville Thursday at Hot Springs Country Club at 9 a.m.
