Lakeside continues domination on hard court

Lakeside finished the conference season undefeated after winning its final two matches against El Dorado and Texarkana on Monday and Tuesday.

On Monday, Lakeside swept all of its matches against El Dorado. In girls singles, Julia Malone defeated Emma Thomas in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0, and Ava Monte beat Millie Mobley, 6-1, 6-0.

Mary Catherine Cowen and Isabella Calhoun also took a straight-sets victory in girls doubles over Bunsall and Carroll, 6-0, 6-0. Sydney Blount and Elizabeth Cowen defeated Bonsall and Neely, 6-1, 6-0.

In boys singles, Ben Hollis defeated B. Blackburn, 6-2, 6-0, and William Ivy defeated H. Lawrence, 6-4, 6-4.

Greyson Cornelison and Walker Wood defeated R. Coan and A. Dod, 6-3, 6-3, and Brooks Bell and Griffin Gulley defeated B. Coan and C. Helm.

On Tuesday, Malone defeated M. Dowd from Texarkana, 6-1, 6-3, in girls singles. In girls doubles, Mary Catherine Cowen and Calhoun defeated Wren and Wilkerson, 6-1, 6-2, and Blount and Elizabeth Cowen defeated Jones and Schooler, 6-1, 6-2.

Hollis dominated both of his singles matches with an 8-0 win over W. Dowd and an 8-1 win over N. Price. Ivy split his singles matches, defeating Dowd 8-1 and losing 6-8 to Price. Sam Stevens defeated Forsyth, 8-3.

Cornelison and Wood defeated McCoy and Floyd 8-4 before downing Cornelius and Ivy 8-3. Gulley and Bell defeated Cornelius and Ivy 8-6 before downing McCoy and Floyd 8-5.

Lakeside will host the 5A South conference tournament on Tuesday and Wednesday with matches starting at 10 a.m. each day.

Guevara, Pace win fifth straight vs. LH

Hot Springs girls doubles team Angelina Guevara and Ella Pace earned their fifth straight doubles victory Tuesday in the last regular season match for both Hot Springs and Lake Hamilton.

The pairing defeated Lake Hamilton’s Wyrick and Thornton, 6-0, 6-1. Isabel Ritter and Nina Gunnell lost their match to Tedder and Faulkner, 6-0, 6-1.

Said Angeles and Blaine Martin also took a win in boys doubles with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Praetzel and Berry. Eben Sanders and John Thomas Butler lost to Godwin and Condley, 6-4,

6-1, and Duke Wittnebert and Bryson Austin fell to Taylor and Moralez, 8-5.

In girls singles, Johanna Cetnick defeated Hannah Newcomb, 6-1, 6-1, but Newcomb defeated Guy in her second match, 8-2.

In boys singles, E.J. Martinez fell to Bobnar,

6-0, 6-0, and Falco Oversteeg split his singles matches with a 6-0, 6-0 loss to Estes and a 6-2 win over Bartlett.

Junior Rams split games at home versus Benton

Lakeside split its matches against Benton on Monday as the junior Rams won the first match

2-1 before dropping the second, 2-0.

The junior Rams (13-3) won the first set, 2521, before falling 25-15 in the second to the junior Lady Panthers. Lakeside then held on to win the extra-point battle in the third set, 19-17. Benton won the second match, 25-20, 25-22.

In the first match, Madi Bell Landry led the junior Rams with five kills and three blocks, and Carsen Cordell had five kills and one block. Lauren Foreman led the team in service with seven service points, and Kate Forman had five along with 11 digs, and both served up an ace.

Landry again led the team in the second match with three kills and two blocks, and Cordell added three kills with a block. Kaitlyn Threadgill dominated the back row with 12 digs, and Cordell added nine.

Benton won both of the eighth grade matches, 2-1 and 2-0.

Benton won the first set of the first match 2521, but Lakeside (5-3) battled back to take a 25-20 win in the second before dropping the third,

9-15. Benton won the second match, 25-13, 25-16. Jaime McKuin led the Rams with eight service points and an ace in the first match, and Landry had five service points and an ace in the second.

The junior Rams will travel to Morrilton on Saturday to compete in the Morrilton Invitation­al Tournament.
