Wolves cruise to a 42-7 rout of Cyclones
PEARCY — Lake Hamilton continued its domination on the gridiron as the Wolves turned a 21-7 halftime lead over Russellville into a 42-7 rout at Bank OZK Field Friday night.
On the opening drive of the second half, Lake Hamilton (6-0, 3-0 6A West) sophomore Tevin Woodley punched it in from the 2 yard line to cap a 10-play, 90-yard drive with 5:40 left in the period. Senior kicker Spencer Hillard’s kick made it 28-7 over Russellville (1-5, 0-3).
Owen Miller found his way into the end zone three minutes later for his 14th score of the year, this one on a 33-yard dash with 2:00 left on the clock for a 35-7 lead going into the final period after Hillard’s kick.
After the Wolves defense held the Cyclones to a three-and-out, the Wolves set the clock in motion under the mercy rule at the 8:35 mark when Woodley had another short run to the end zone with Hillard setting the final with a 6 for 6 night on PATs.
Lake Hamilton recovered a fumble early in the game, and Miller found his way into the end zone from the 1 with 3:42 off the clock for a 7-0 lead. Junior quarterback Layne Warrick faked a handoff with under four minutes left in the period and dashed 52 yards for the end zone to make it 14-0.
Moments later, Russellville responded as junior quarterback Brayden Whitford tossed out to senior Justin Loveless who then connected with sophomore Gavin Graham for a 46-yard touchdown. Senior Connor Cooper booted the kick to cut the Wolves’ lead in half with 2:40 left until the second period.
The Wolves drove the ball down the field on a 12-play, 92-yard drive with Woodley running the ball in from the 14 with less than three minutes off the clock in the second frame to stretch Lake Hamilton’s lead back out to 14 points.
Lake Hamilton travels to Siloam Springs to take on the Panthers Friday night. The Cyclones host Greenwood.
