Village author to speak at FOCCL’s ‘Wine and Cheese with the Author’

-

HOT SPRINGS VILLAGE — Friends of the Coronado Center Library will continue its “Wine and Cheese with the Author” series at 3 p.m. Oct. 24 in Room 5 at the Coronado Center with Hot Springs Village resident and author Dave Welch.

Daniel Davidson is the nom de plume for Welch and his son, Daniel, who write and illustrate children’s books together.

It all began when Dan Welch and his brother, David, were young boys and their father would tell them stories about giraffes — at the time, Dave Welch had a large collection of giraffes and he would make up stories for entertainment while driving and so forth.

When Dan Welch was graduating from college and deciding on a career as an elementary teacher, he enrolled in a children’s literature class, where one of the assignments was to write a children’s story. He decided to write one based on some of those childhood memories, and the result was a little classroom book he called “The Giraffe Book,” a news release said.

He got a good grade in class, came home and talked to his dad about converting it into a published work — it turned into their first book together, evolved a bit, and became “The Little Leopard,” with the giraffe playing a major role.

This was the first of four — “The Little Leopard,” “The Mysterious Leopard,” “The Beautiful Peacock” and “Whatever Happened to Oreo.” The fifth book is in progress.

Dave Welch is a former college-level educator, who moved to the Village with his wife, Marie, in 2010. Welch is very active in the community, in Kiwanis, UUVC, Men’s 9-Hole Golf Association, Pickleball Club and other organizations.

Dan Welch is now the head of Boulder Country Day School in Colorado, married to Ali, with two children, Paige and Ryan.

Join FOCCL members and guests for complimentary wine and cheese as Welch discusses his collaboration with his son and shares children’s comments about the books. Marie Welch, an accomplished actress, will read the first book and possibly some snippets from the new book. Admission is free.
