Fountain Lake 3, Harding Academy 0

PARIS — Fountain Lake has advanced to the Class 3A state volleyball semifinals for the second-straight year after defeating Harding Academy for the second time this season.

The Lady Cobras (17-3) had a battle on their hands, but they managed to stop the Lady Wildcats (18-5) in three sets after a 3-1 victory on Sonny Lambert Court in September.

Fountain Lake took a 25-22 win in the first

set before powering to a 25-13 win in the second. Harding Academy battled to the end, forcing extra points, but the Lady Cobras earned the 26-24 win.

“We came out super fired up,” said Fountain Lake head coach Tina Moore. “Yesterday we played a little flat, so I was kind of worried about that. But we came out and clicked on the front end. We jumped out early, and that set the tone for the entire match.”

Fountain Lake will play in today’s 3 p.m. semifinal against the winner of the late quarterfinal between the top-seeded team from the 3A East, Hoxie, and the No. 2 seed from the 3A West, Charleston. This was the first meeting of the year between Hoxie and Charleston.

Fountain Lake drew a tie against Charleston earlier this month at the Lady Eagle Invitational in Paris, winning 25-9 in the first set before falling 25-22 in the second while subbing in junior varsity players. The Lady Cobras have not played Hoxie.

“I told the girls that I don’t want to over-think things,” Moore said. “We’re going to go out there and do our jobs.”

Lavaca 3, Cutter Morning Star 1

YELLVILLE — Cutter Morning Star came out ready in the first set, but Lavaca managed to earn the upset victory and advance to today’s semifinal.

The Lady Eagles (18-4) took a 25-14 win in the first set over the Lady Golden Arrows (15-6).

“We came out ready,” said first-year CMS head coach Lydia Shelton. “We struggled a little in the second set, and I think we got in our head from there.”

Lavaca went on to win the next three sets, 2522, 27-25, 25-22.

“We stuck to what we’ve been doing,” Shelton said. “We went over things like usual. We talked about everything during practice today. I even thought about switching some things up, but I decided not to. This was what got us here.”

Shelton said that she was extremely proud of the team, despite the loss.

“I told the girls that I’ve never been more proud of a team,” she said. “They could have given up, but they fought through it. They’ve done that all year long. They’ve overcome so many things. I told them that in the end, it’s not about volleyball. You’ve proved to me that you can overcome adversity, and that will get you through life.”
