Disproportionate criticism

-

Dear editor:

As a regular reader of the letters to the editor, it appears that conservative writers, that support World War II type patriotism and Christian morality, receive a disproportionate amount of harsh criticism. It is apparent that their well-documented letters require a great deal of research time and effort. So why do they continue to write?

Do you ever wonder if dedicated writers such as Dr. Sternberg, Lloyd Hoffman and Mary Robinson ever question whether their letters have or will ever make a difference? If you are one of their critics you may think they are wasting their time. Are they?

Pondering this thought brought to mind a little story that supposedly took place during a war in Italy: Many years ago in a small Italian village, an army officer recruited several men for service. As they were marching away, a little old lady fell in behind the marching troops with a broom on her shoulder. The new recruits began to laugh and ridicule her and one asked what good did she think she could be in the terrible wart? She responded something like, “I don’t know but I want everyone to know what side I’m on.”

Our country is in a war-of-words locally and especially in Washington, D.C. I hope and pray that efforts that support patriotism and Christian morality will have positive results that impact our community and nation. Regardless, there is no doubt about which side the above-mentioned writers are on.

Perhaps there is an important underlying message in these letters that critics have missed: In Joshua 24:15 we read, “… choose for yourself whom you will serve — as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” (The New American Standard Bible) Robert Sowell Hot Springs
