Packets available for director positions

- DAVID SHOWERS

The city made packets available Friday for the three director positions up for election in November.

Registered voters residing in the district they wish to represent for at least 30 days and who are 21 or older are eligible to file. Petitions for nomination have to include the signatures of 50 registered city voters.

Candidates are encouraged to collect 75 to 100 signatures in the event some are disqualified during the certification process. They are also required to file a statement of financial interest. Those interested in running can contact the city clerk’s office at 321-6805 to get a packet. The city said the filing period is from July 24 to Aug. 14.

City director is an unpaid position with duties that include approving the city’s budget, setting its policies and approving contracts of $60,000 or more. The board serves as the city’s supreme legislative and executive body.

Districts 1, 3 and 6 are up for election on the seven-member board. City Clerk Harmony Morrissey said Friday that packets were provided to the three incumbent directors, whether they were seeking reelection or not. Marcia Dobbs-Smith was the only person to request a packet as of Friday afternoon. She lives in District 3.

District 3 and 6 directors Becca Clark and Randy Fale are both serving their second terms, having first been elected to the board in 2012. District 3 comprises west central Hot Springs, including the Quapaw and Ouachita areas and the Greenwood, Hobson and Albert Pike corridors. District 6 is in southeast Hot Springs and includes a large part of the Lakeside School District.

Clark owns two small businesses, including a senior move management company. Fale is a retired

hospital administrator.

The board appointed District 1 Director Erin Holliday to serve the remainder of Suzanne Davidson’s second term last May. The sculptor and executive director of Emergent Arts, a nonprofit community arts center, represents north Hot Springs, including the Park and Whittington areas.
