Intoxicated man arrested after alleged threats with a shotgun

- STEVEN MROSS

A reportedly intoxicated local man was arrested late Monday after allegedly threatening multiple family members at his residence with a loaded shotgun.

Hunter Cole Carkeet, 20, of

578 Rushfork Road, Lot E-5, was taken into custody at his residence shortly after 10 p.m. and charged with a felony count of first-degree terroristic threatening, punishable by up to six years in prison.

Carkeet, who lists no prior criminal history, was later released on a $2,500 bond and is set to appear July 20 in Garland County District Court.

According to the probable cause affidavit, shortly before

9:30 p.m., Garland County sheriff’s Deputy Kevin Hampton responded to a disturbance involving a gun at 578 Rushfork and while en route was told the person who called had made it out of the residence safely, but one person was still inside.

Upon arrival, Hampton spoke to a man, 30, and woman who stated their cousin, identified as Carkeet, had loaded a Mossburg shotgun and pointed it at them so they ran out the door to escape.

Arkansas State Police troopers arrived to assist Hampton in setting up a perimeter around the residence. More deputies arrived and sheriff’s Cpl. Jon Lane began trying to communicate with Carkeet, calling to him to open the front door.

Carkeet came to the door as instructed and then fell backward into the residence “due to his level of intoxication.” He finally came back to the door and sat down with his hands raised and was detained by deputies.

In searching the residence, deputies found a woman, 19, lying on a mattress in the bedroom. They noted the bedroom door was broken into two pieces and numerous household items were broken and scattered on the floor.

Lane located the shotgun with one shell in the chamber and two in the magazine that had been thrown into a corner of the bedroom. The woman stated she was hiding in the bedroom due to Carkeet being irate and having the shotgun.

Carkeet’s cousin indicated he wanted to press charges for pointing the gun at him earlier so Carkeet was arrested. After being read his rights, Carkeet reportedly refused to make a statement and indicated he would “fight the charge in court” because he couldn’t have a felony hindering his employment.
