‘Defund’ city board

-

Dear editor:

I’ve spent several weeks watching the news about the riots, protests and monument destruction, COVID-19 — tell me, what’s happening next to our country? Oh yes, we have an election coming in November and there is controversy over the “poll vs. mail-in ballots.”

Here’s what I am for: safety, stay home and have relatives do your shopping or call Walmart — I understand they will now deliver your groceries. Shop online and save the Post Office jobs, they’ll even sell you stamps at your mailbox, thank you to my postman. Thank you to our police, sheriff, firefighters and ambulance services here in our community. Please do not “defund” these departments, instead, let’s “defund” the Board of Directors for this town.

Here’s what I am against: my taxes being used for “tourism attractions” (the baseball field), our state flag being degraded because of a star, Confederate monuments being destroyed, national monuments in Washington, D.C., destroyed, war monuments being defaced, cities taken over by criminals, those who destroy businesses and kill the people trying to protect their properties. And I was ashamed when Nancy Pelosi gave George Floyd’s brother a folded flag, an honor reserved for our military.

I didn’t hear the speech given by George Floyd’s aunt. What I read in the paper was a woman talking about voting for change. I don’t care who you vote for in the upcoming elections, but research what they stand for and against.

I am ashamed that the Democrats are trying to pass a bill allowing 16-year-olds to vote, they aren’t even taught U.S. and world history in school anymore. Are they taught civics? These were “required subjects” in education during my high school years. Eighteen-year-olds won the right to vote because their senior trip was to Vietnam after graduating. You were drafted into the war, you died on foreign soil, if your family was lucky your remains came home to be buried.

Read the bills up for House and Senate votes; it’s the “hidden items” you need to watch for. L.J. Gibson Hot Springs
