Inspect the inspectors

-

Dear editor:

We recently purchased a small home as an investment property and have been fixing it up. The electricity had been turned off for over six months, so we had to have an inspection by the city permit and inspection division. That was the beginning of a nightmare in which, in my own opinion, the city has systematically set up a way to collect as much money as possible.

We dealt with David from the electrical inspection department. He did not carry a clipboard or anything to take notes with. The first time, he pointed out two things. We contacted a licensed electrician who obtained the permits and made the changes. On the inspection that we assumed would pass the residence, David found something else. We had changed or done nothing since the first inspection. Another permit, another payment to the electrician. Third inspection, David found something else. Same scenario all over again, coming out of our pockets.

At no time did David ever write anything down to give to us with specifics. At this point, we don’t even know whether he is a licensed electrician himself. In the end, we spent a lot of time and money unnecessarily on something that could have been dealt with in one trip, had it been done in a professional and organized manner.

In my opinion, this is done so that the city can receive as much money as possible. Fine. Now take the money and fix the streets. They’re awful. Kate Jones Hot Springs
