Third teen arrested in April drive-by shooting

- STEVEN MROSS

The third of five suspects sought in connection with an April 22 drive-by shooting was arrested Saturday morning on a felony warrant.

James Martez Canady, 18, who lists a Washington Street address, was taken into custody shortly after 8:30 a.m. in the 200 block of Leonard Street and charged with committing a terroristic act, punishable by up to life in prison.

Hot Springs police had responded to the Leonard Street residence regarding a possible assault with a firearm and encountered Canady in the backyard and arrested him on the warrant. Canady was being held on zero bond and was set to appear Monday in Garland County District Court.

Two alleged accomplices, Kylan D’andrea Allison, 19, and Virgil Pierre Doss, 19, both of Hot Springs, were arrested on April 27 on the same charge as Canady and remained in custody Monday on zero bond.

Allison and Doss both pleaded not guilty to the charges on July 7 in Garland County Circuit Court. Allison is set for a bond hearing on Sept. 15 and a hearing on the admissibility of any statement he made to police on Nov. 17. Doss is set for a hearing on the admissibility of any statements he made on Sept. 15.

According to the probable cause affidavit for Canady, on April 22, shortly after noon, an unknown suspect in a silver 2020 Kia Sorento SUV fired several shots at 120 Pinewood St., hitting the house and a vehicle parked out front. No one was injured and it was noted one of the listed residents, identified as Doss, was not home at the time of the shooting. Four spent 9-mm cartridge cases were collected at the scene.

Around 4:30 p.m. that same day, police responded to the area of North Patterson and Rector streets regarding shots fired and upon arrival discovered the residence at 412 N. Patterson had been hit by gunfire numerous times with bullets going into interior rooms and 33 spent cartridge cases were found in the yard of the residence and on the street. No one was injured.

A witness reported hearing the shots and seeing a gray Toyota Camry occupied by several people fleeing the area. He was able to give officers the license plate number. Video surveillance was obtained from the area which showed four suspects exit the Camry and begin shooting at the house while the driver, later identified as Allison based on the license plate information, stayed in the car.

On April 27, Allison was arrested on an unrelated theft warrant and he and Doss, who was with him at the time, were taken to the police department where they were questioned about the shooting after being read their Miranda rights.

Allison reportedly admitted he was the driver of the Camry and knew the other four suspects, including Doss and Canady, were armed and were going to the house on North Patterson to shoot it.

When he was questioned, Doss said he knew about the shooting on North Patterson, but “had nothing to do with it.” He admitted to taking two guns out of his house on Pinewood and loading them into Allison’s car. Doss provided paperwork showing where and when he had purchased the guns on April 22, just 45 minutes before the shooting.

Video from the pawnshop where the guns were purchased reportedly shows Allison, Doss, Canady and another known suspect arriving at the shop where they waited while Doss purchased the guns. The affidavit notes that the clothing Canady was seen wearing at the pawnshop was the same as worn by one of the suspects seen in the video of the shooting.

A warrant for Canady was issued on April 29.
