Rams set to take on Cardinals to kick off 5A South play

Lakeside opens 5A South conference play tonight as the Camden Fairview Cardinals visit Chick Austin Stadium.

The Cardinals (2-2) have senior Gunner Branch lining up as signal caller. The quarterbac­k has completed 22 of 44 passes (50%) for

233 yards while rushing 29 times for 239 yards. Lakeside senior quarterbac­k Will Ross has connected with his receivers 58.9% (63 of 107) of the time while racking up 662 yards.

Camden Fairview came up short against fellow 5A-Central’s Watson Chapel last week, falling 22-17.

Camden Fairview led in the first quarter, but the Cardinals fell behind in the second as Watson Chapel put up 14 points for a 14-10 lead at halftime. The second half saw a 9-yard passing touchdown for Watson Chapel with a successful

2-point conversion, and the Cardinals responded with a 1-yard rushing touchdown and a successful PAT, but the team was unable to bring enough energy in the final quarter to overtake their opponent.

Branch completed 9 of 17 (52.9%) of his passes for 103 yards in the game while rushing eight times for 18 yards and one touchdown. Senior Reshard Clardy led the Cardinals in yardage with 16 carries for 96 yards.

The Rams (2-2) recovered from a 14-7 halftime deficit at Malvern to take a 21-14 win at the newly-remodeled Claude Mann Stadium. Ross was 12 for 20 (60%) passing for 106 yards and a touchdown and scored one touchdown on the ground, despite finishing with negative yardage. Senior running back Isaac Echols rushed for 129 yards on 24 carries and scoring one touchdown.

Senior Will Perrigo led the Rams defensivel­y with 22 tackles, including 15 solo tackles, and had seven tackles for a loss, and sophomore Ethan Rogers recovered a fumble in the end zone for a touchdown.

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. tonight.
