Decisions to make
Dear editor:
We are going to have a decision to make Nov. 3 that will be so momentous it will determine whether we remain a country of the people, for the people. by the people. This administration has done everything in its power to undercut, diminish and weaken every agency we have fought hard to put in place to see that we have our safety and best interests protected from those who would take advantage of our inability to fight back.
Now Mitch McConnell and Donald Trump in conjunction with Lindsey Graham are going to pack the Supreme Court with someone that will overturn all the programs we fought to achieve in order to assure we can live safely and on our own terms. The Republicans have made it their goal since the inception of Social Security and Medicare to take the funds and give them to private industry to regulate or use as they wish or not. Telling us FICA taxes will be reduced will kill Social Security. It’s the only way we pay to cover our old age or disability. We control the way the money is used. The people funding the GOP want that money. They see it as doing nothing but earning interest so that we in our hour of need or at retirement will have the money for our survival. And they want it.
The GOP has sworn to overturn ACA which people now have medical care they can afford and preexisting conditions are also covered. The new Supreme Court, if Trump gets his way, increases the number of right-wing conservatives on the bench. Roe v Wade will be overturned. Women will have to leave to country or return to back alley, coat hangar abortionists if they get pregnant with a child they can’t afford or it has potential life-threatening disabilities.
The EPA has been gutted, the CDC has been made a rubber stamp agency allowing any company to do nothing if they so desire for employee safety. No longer will clean water or clean air be mandated when a company dumps waste into the air or water. Rachel Maddow just exposed how the standards set by the CDC to protect the people in a Smithfield meatpacking plant were rewritten as “whatever you want to do.” Thousands died from COVID-19.
Nov. 3, we have a choice. Our country is about to be destroyed and turned into an oligarchy ruled by fascism. It’s your last chance to save everything you’ve come to expect from your government. If you haven’t registered to vote you better do it soon. And vote like your life depends on it. It does.
