Elliott raises $1.4M in bid for US House seat

-

LITTLE ROCK — Democratic challenger Joyce Elliott outraised Republican Rep. French Hill for the second quarter in a row as fundraising and spending ramped up for an increasingly heated race for a central Arkansas congressional seat.

Elliott ’ s campaign on Wednesday announced raising more than $1.4 million during the three month period that ended September 30. Hill’s campaign said he raised just over $1 million during the same period.

Elliott’s campaign didn’t say how much she spent during the quarter or had on hand. Hill reported more than $1.14 million on hand. Both have been airing TV ads heavily in the seven-county district that includes

Little Rock.

Elliott, a state senator, lost a bid for the same 2nd District seat by 20 percentage points a decade ago, but she’s running a competitive race against Hill in a race that’s attracted outside money on both sides. Hill was first elected to the seat in 2014.

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and a Republican super PAC, the Congressional Leadership Fund, have launched six-figure ad buys. Two other groups, the National Education Association Advocacy Fund and the American Bankers Association, also began running ads this week.

Police: Suspect in killings caught in California

LITTLE ROCK — A southern Arkansas man suspected in the killings of his girlfriend and her 4-year-old son has been arrested in the Los Angeles area, police said Tuesday.

Jory Worthen was captured in Burbank, California, on Monday after leading U.S. marshals on a foot chase across rooftops, Camden Police Chief Boyd Woody said during a news conference. Worthen faces two counts of capital murder in the June 2019 deaths of Alyssa Cannon, 20, and her child at their home in Camden, about 100 miles southwest of Little Rock.

Woody said authorities suspected Worthen was somewhere on the West Coast after Cannon’s 2007 white Honda Accord was found in Washington state, KATV-TV reported. Authorities received countless tips about Worthen’s whereabouts, including in Florida and Georgia, Woody said.

“We just never wanted to give up until we had him physically,” Woody said.

Worthen had been hiding out in hotels in California and using a stolen identity, Woody said.

He is being held in the Los Angeles County jail pending his extradition to Arkansas.
