Garland County residents can bring household hazardous waste to the Garland County Fairgrounds, 4831 Malvern Ave., for the Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day on Saturday, Oct. 17, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The event offers “safe, free disposal of unused or leftover household products containing toxic, flammable, corrosive or reactive chemicals,” a city news release said. A paint exchange area will also be available for paint that is still usable and stored in the original container with a legible label. Passenger tires — no rims — and electronic waste will also be accepted.

“This drive-thru event helps prevent improper disposal of hazardous waste, including placing them in household trash, pouring them down sinks, toilets or storm drains, or dumping them on the ground,” Hot Springs Solid Waste Director Randy Atkinson said in the release.

“Left stored improperly at home, hazardous waste can pose danger to children and pets, and possibly cause hazardous fumes or fires.”

The event, sponsored by the Southwest Central Regional Solid Waste Management District, is for household quantities only. Hazardous waste from companies and businesses will not be accepted. For more information, call 501-321-6911.
