Eagles battle, fall on road to Poyen

- FROM STAFF REPORTS

POYEN — After trailing 21-0 at halftime, Cutter Morning Star put up 22 points in the third quarter, but Poyen added 35 in the second half to take a 56-28 win.

The 22 points scored by the Eagles (0-7, 0-1 2A-5) were the most scored against the Indians (6-0, 1-0) so far this season.

Eagles quarterback Sam Moore kicked off the second half with a 2-yard run for a score with Dagan Rader carrying the ball on the conversion play to pull within 21-8. The Indians responded with another touchdown, but a 68-yard kickoff return by Kaden Prather and another short run by Sam Moore left Cutter Morning Star trailing 27-22 after Landon Watson’s reception on the conversion play.

“I was pleased with our performance,” first-year head coach Matt Kinsinger said. “We just, you know, we ran out of gas. You know, there was a point in time, I think somewhere around the third quarter, we were, I think, (within) maybe five points. … They played hard.”

The Indians scored again in the third, and Keshawn Blevins caught an 11-yard pass from Moore to pull within 35-28 early in the fourth, but Poyen scored three more touchdowns to secure the final.

“We did some things, you know, we don’t normally do, and I just kind of felt just because they were pretty good up front, you know, offensively and defensively as far as their D-line and O-line and linebackers and stuff,” Kinsinger said. “So we just, we spread it out a little bit. And I thought Sam probably had his best game, you know, just decision making and complete passes. He just looked … pretty comfortable back there.”

Moore completed 9 of 16 passes for 187 yards and a touchdown with two interceptions while rushing 18 times for 36 yards. Watson had 11 touches for 38 yards, and Blevins caught six passes for 129 yards, including one for 48 yards.

“Every week, I feel like our kids are getting better, you know, and they’re starting to believe in their abilities, and that they can compete no matter what,” Kinsinger said. “And, you know, that’s what I asked them to do. That’s what they did. … I think, you know, that the kids are doing a good job of buying in and executing.”

The Eagles will be off this week for their scheduled bye after Mountain Pine moved to 8-man football. They will host Mount Ida on Oct. 23.
