Battery suspect arrested on multiple charges after fleeing from deputies

- STEVEN MROSS

A Hot Springs man who allegedly assaulted his wife and then fled from Garland County sheriff’s deputies early Monday was arrested on multiple misdemeanor charges and traffic violations.

Brady Mitchell McConnell, 45, of 110 Oakdale Terrace, was taken into custody around 4:15 a.m. and charged with misdemeanor counts of third-degree domestic battery, fleeing in a vehicle, reckless driving, driving on a suspended driver’s license, careless and prohibited driving and cited for having defective vehicle lights, making an improper turn signal, speeding and not wearing a seat belt.

McConnell was being held on a zero bond and was set to appear Wednesday in Garland County District Court.

According to the probable cause affidavit, sheriff’s Deputy Charles Delahunt and Cpl. Matt Cogburn were dispatched to the Oakdale residence regarding a disturbance in progress and while en route were told the suspect had left the scene in a small white pickup heading toward Mountain Pine Road.

Cogburn headed down Mountain Pine Road toward Clear Creek Road to see if he could spot the pickup and as he turned onto Clear Creek he spotted a white truck with one headlight out coming the opposite way. He turned around and attempted to make a traffic stop by activating his lights, but the driver, later identified as McConnell, sped up and continued toward Mountain Pine Road, running a stop sign in the process.

Cogburn caught up to the pickup in the 1700 block of Mountain Pine Road as it turned down a driveway of a residence and then “proceeded to drive around the house three times” before finally stopping in the front yard.

McConnell was taken into custody without further incident at that point and he reportedly told Cogburn he fled “because he knew his wife had called about the fight they were in.”

Meanwhile, Delahunt arrived at the Oakdale residence and spoke to McConnell’s wife, 52, who stated her husband had got mad at her about taking the dog out. She said they started arguing and McConnell spit in her face and then punched her in the rib cage.

She alleges he then grabbed her by the back of the head and “forced her down in the pillow holding her there.” She was complaining of pain to her ribs and the back of her head, but refused medical attention. Delahunt noted she had redness to her midsection and scratches to her right ear.
