- STEVEN MROSS

A local man was arrested on felony and misdemeanor charges Tuesday after allegedly assaulting his wife in front of a sheriff’s deputy after earlier slapping his

9-year-old daughter. Spencer Lane Manning, 26, of 129 H.L. Circle, was taken into custody at his residence shortly after 1:30 p.m. and charged with a felony count of second-degree battery, punishable by up to 10 years in prison, because the victim is under the age of 12, and a misdemeanor count of third-degree domestic battery, punishable by up to one year in jail.

Manning was being held on a zero bond and was set to appear Wednesday in Garland County District Court. He had previously pleaded guilty Aug. 18,

2017, to a misdemeanor count of third-degree domestic battery involving a girlfriend and was sentenced to one year in jail with all but 10 days suspended and six months’ probation.

According to the probable cause affidavit, shortly before

1: 30 p. m., Garland County sheriff ’ s Deputy Michael Wagner responded to the residence regarding a disturbance.

Wagner said he saw a man on the front porch dragging a woman back into the house by her hair while she was screaming for help. Wagner ran up to the door and went inside and had the man, later identified as Manning, step outside and “tell me what was going on.”

Manning reportedly stated he and his wife, 31, had gotten into an argument. She went outside at one point and he didn’t want her to leave so he “drug her back into the house.”

Wagner spoke to Manning’s wife, who stated Manning had become upset over their daughter’s grades and went back to their bedroom to pack a few things to leave for the evening. She said she went to the bedroom to check on him and he grabbed her by the neck and threw her on the floor.

While they were fighting, the daughter, 9, heard it and came into the bedroom. The wife stated Manning grabbed the girl by both her wrists and dragged her back to her room and began yelling at her. At one point, Manning slapped the girl “real hard” on the right side of her face.

At that point, the wife went outside to “scream for help” and that was when Manning came out, pushed her down the stairs and then dragged her back inside by her hair.

Wagner noted the wife had a laceration on her right ankle, redness and swelling to her chest and neck and was complaining of pain in her right leg. The daughter reportedly had redness and swelling on her right cheek.
