Sylvia J. Baldwin

SAN ANGELO, Texas — Sylvia J. Baldwin, of San Angelo, Texas, originally of Hot Springs, Ark., passed away on Nov. 18, 2020. Sylvia was born on Jan. 14, 1941, to Charles J. Long and Jewell Merritt of New Madrid, Mo.

Sylvia was a graduate of Lakeside High School of Hot Springs, Ark.; of St. Joseph’s Nursing School of Hot Springs ( one of the last three- year nursing schools in America); and of Angelo State University, where she graduated cum laude with a BSN in Nursing in 1984.

Sylvia was a proud daughter of Charles J. Long, a tank company commander who served bravely and honorably in both World War II and the Korean War. Sylvia’s mother, Jewell, sacrificed greatly in not seeing her husband during his time in the service of this nation. Jewell’s sacrifice cannot go without mention. And Sylvia was very blessed and always thankful for her beloved sister, Yolanda (affectionately known as “Landa”) Lord, a most kind and beautiful person, whose light very much equaled her own.

Sylvia was a gifted writer and teacher. She ensured that the students whom she nurtured as LVNs were well-prepared for their careers in the nursing field. Sylvia co-wrote a textbook in nursing (the endocrine system section) that has been influential in maintaining nursing standards to this day. She was a lifelong learner; and her reading ability, along with her ability to recall written text, was extraordinary — as many of her students can attest.

Sylvia is survived by her husband, Bobbie C. Baldwin, of San Angelo, Texas, a veteran of the Vietnam War, who served his time courageously in the U.S. Navy. She is also survived by sons, Gregory, of San Angelo, Texas, and his wife, Barbara; Stephen C. Baldwin, of Hutto, Texas; and Matthew L. Baldwin, of San Angelo, Texas, and his wife, Angela. Sylvia is also missed by her loving grandchildren, Emily, Connor and Lauren, and her great- grandson, Josh Eaves.

Sylvia is also dearly remembered by her sister-in-law, Ann Price; and by cousin, Rosemary Merritt and niece, Angela Lord, who are especially among the many cousins, nieces and nephews who live in the states of both Arkansas and California.

Sylvia leaves behind in mourning some loving pets as well, most importantly her dear dachshund, Molly. Also, Nemo and Violet, Penny, and Lucky the border collie.

The graveside service will be 10 a. m. Saturday, Dec. 12, 2020, at Fairmount Cemetery with the Rev. Celia Ellery officiating.
