Mayflower thumps Jessieville girls

- FELISHA BUTLER

JESSIEVILLE — With solid and consistent play throughout the night, Mayflower rolled Jessieville 56-16 at Jessieville Sports Arena Tuesday.

Both teams hit a bucket to start the game, but the Lady Eagles hit a 12-0 run behind multiple playmakers before Madison Cummings planted back-to-back baskets to pull within 16-6.

“The first couple of minutes, I felt we were ready to play and after that we just fell off,” Jessieville head coach Magen Scrivner said. “Our effort level was not very good tonight. We’re missing some kids that help us on both ends of the floor and stuff like that. I don’t know if it was a mindset thing or what, but they’ll battle back, and we’re going to come in hard and practice. We’ll be ready to go Friday.”

Junior Harli Bassett put up the Lady Lions’ only point in the second period as Mayflower stretched to a 36-7 halftime lead.

“We came out, what I’d call a little ugly in the beginning,” said Mayflower head coach Coty Storms. “We were able to pull it together, make enough plays to stretch it out and set the momentum for the rest of the game. Early first half, we did a really good job with ball movement against their zone to create some mismatches

that we knew we had coming in. We were able to take advantage of those and you look up and it’s 14-15, it’s nice and it’s easy to carry that momentum on.”

Coming back from break, Mayflower hit a 6- 0 run that ended when Jessieville’s Carley Seamon found Justice Cole on the outside for a 3-pointer with 4:04 left in the third.

Mayflower continued to stretch its lead to a 51-10 lead going into the final eight minutes.

“In the second half, we got some looks in the paint, and we were able to get some baskets inside,” Scrivner said. “We missed some shots early, too, and I think we got our heads down but we’ll be ready to go Friday.”

Miller finished with three steals and two rebounds, Cummings had two steals, two boards, and a block and Seamon had two steals, two boards and an assist.

Jessieville hosts Atkins Friday with the junior boys starting at 4:30 p.m.
