Lakeside JV downs Mena
Lakeside’s junior varsity teams both picked up wins over Mena Tuesday night at Lakeside Athletic Complex with the boys taking a 30-17 victory and the girls winning 37-24.
The Lady Rams held an 18-13 halftime lead, and junior Emmy Gammill found sophomore Riley Orr inside for a quick basket to get the Lady Rams going in the second half.
Lady Bearcat sophomore guard Madi Lyle answered back with a 3-pointer to keep play close, but Orr hit three consecutive shots to ultimately ice the match.
Mena took control of the game early as Lyle put the Lady Bearcats on the board first with a 3-pointer off their first possession. The Lady Rams’ dominance soon began to appear, however, as Orr answered in the paint before sophomore Kennedy Brock nailed a trey for a 5-3 lead.
Mena’s Madison Blair answered with one of her own from downtown to put the Lady Bearcats back on top 8-7, but that would prove to be their last lead as Brock nailed another from long range and sophomore Emylee Bittinger found Orr in transition off a fast break to continue Lakeside’s momentum and move the junior varsity girls to 3-0 on the season.
Orr led all scorers with 15 points, two assists and three rebounds, while Brock tallied 9 points, two rebounds and two assists. Sophomore Allie Pollock added 6 points, five rebounds, two assists and one steal.
Lyle led Mena with 6 points, four rebounds, two steals and one assist, followed by Blair with 5 points, two rebounds and one steal, and sophomore Emmi Hines with 4 points and one rebound.
Sophomore forward Charter Harris led the Rams out to an 18-8 halftime lead, and intense defense kept Lakeside on top the entire second half as sophomores Towle Douglas and Joshua Winfrey hit key baskets to spread the Rams’ lead to 22-10 mid-way through.
Following a 3-point play by Bearcats sophomore Silas McIntyre coming upon the two-minute mark, Winfrey capped the game with two free throws for another Lakeside victory.
Mena took the early momentum as sophomore Mason Dillard started off the match with a 3-pointer for the first points of the game. Harris took over for the Rams by hitting several inside shots.
Harris’ first- half performance was later capped by an impressive three-play sequence that started with a big block, a 3-pointer and a pull-up jumper off a mean crossover to keep momentum heavily favoring the JV Rams.
Harris led the way with 12 points and four rebounds, while Winfrey added 8 points, two steals and one rebound, and Jeremiah McIntosh tallied 5 points, two steals and one rebound. Douglas added 4 points and one rebound.
McIntyre led Mena with 4 points followed by Dillard with 3 points, and Alex Rocha, Travis
Thrailkill and Sam Effird each with 2 points.
