- STEVEN MROSS

A felon on parole who was being sought for absconding was allegedly found in possession of an illegally sawed-off shotgun and drug paraphernalia after a traffic stop late Monday.

Doniel Montreal Oliver, 29, who lists an Albert Pike Road address, was taken into custody shortly after 11 p.m. and charged with felony counts of possession of a firearm by certain persons, punishable by up to 20 years in prison, criminal use of a prohibited weapon and four counts of possession of drug paraphernalia, each punishable by up to six years, and a misdemeanor count of obstructing government operations.

Oliver, who was convicted May 2, 2017, of theft by receiving of a firearm and possession of a firearm by certain persons, and sentenced to four years in prison, was being held on $18,000 bond and is set to appear today in Garland County District Court.

According to the probable cause affidavit, around 11 p. m. Monday, Hot Springs police saw a gold 2001 Honda Accord traveling at a high rate of speed on Pakis Road and noted it matched the description of a suspect vehicle reportedly involved in several break-ins in the area.

Officers found the Accord with its lights off slowly driving through the parking lot at 300 Pakis. A computer check showed the license plate returned to a different vehicle so they stopped it and made contact with the driver who initially gave a false name but was finally identified as Oliver, who was found to have

an absconder warrant with the state board of parole.

While dispatch was checking his ID, officers saw what appeared to be the stock of a shotgun sticking out from under the driver’s seat so they had Oliver get out and detained him.

After discovering his parole status and the warrant, they searched the vehicle and found three glass pipes with what appeared to be meth residue and digital scales inside the center console. The shotgun was seized and found to be a double-barreled, breech-loading shotgun, loaded with two 12-gauge birdshot rounds, with the barrel cut off below the legal length.

As a convicted felon, Oliver is also prohibited from owning or possessing any firearms.
