Lady Cobras use late push to top Caddo Hills

- FELISHA BUTLER

FOUNTAIN LAKE — Caddo Hills kept Fountain Lake on its toes Tuesday night, but the Lady Cobras gained some power in the fourth quarter to take a 3125 win at Sammy Lambert Court at Irvin J. Bass Gymnasium.

Head coach Chris Mungle praised the defense yielded by the Lady Cobras.

“We played really well defensively,” he said. “Offensively, we didn’t play bad. We just couldn’t make shots. Four or five points blank in the first half. Give (Caddo Hills) credit, they did a really good job defensively. We got a lot of looks, but we just couldn’t finish … but I think they all played really well tonight.

Presley (Hamric) hit some shots right down there on the stretch. We posted her up late and got her a few post looks in there and did a really good job. As a group, we played fairly well tonight. Turnovers were down, but we’ve just got to finish shots.”

With a 13-12 Fountain Lake lead at halftime, Caddo Hills’ Bell came back from the intermission with a pair of free throws to reclaim the lead. Bailey Helton answered with a set of her own over a minute later before Bell punched in a putback and teammate Young sent two in from the charity stripe with 3:13 on the clock for an 18-15 lead.

Karli Bryant pulled the Cobras within 1 as a shot from the free throw line from Hamric knotted the score with 26.8 seconds to go in the third period.

“My kids didn’t come here to work hard,” said Caddo Hills head coach James Owens. “I don’t know what the deal was. This is the first game where they really just laid down on me and just didn’t get after it. We don’t have very many girls, but they all rotate in and try to play. We try to keep fresh legs on the court; that way we exert energy on the defensive. Offensive, being able to attack and we did neither of them for four quarters.”

Coldwell spotted Powell in the paint for a bucket as Kara Martin added Fountain Lake’s only 2-point shot in the quarter for 20-all. Karlie Craver kickstarted fourth quarter scoring with a 3-pointer, but Caddo Hills found the rim to keep the hosts within sight as Hamric sank a bucket off a Martin assist that was answered with a set of free throws from Veazey to pull the Lady Indians within 25-24 with 5:36 left in the game.

The Lady Cobras pulled ahead behind back-to-back buckets by Hamric as Caddo Hills hit a dry spell that was broken by a free throw shot by Coldwell with 22.4 seconds to go. Martin went 2 for 2 from the charity stripe to seal the final.

“In the second half, come back out a little bit more the same,” Mungle said.
