Seals have strong showing

The Hot Springs Family YMCA Seals swim team recently competed in the Jack Frost Invitation­al and Battle for the Belt.

At the Jack Frost Invitation­al in the

10 and under girls, Natalie Welch placed seventh in the 50-meter backstroke.

For the 10 and under boys, Jack Roberts finished second in the 50-meter backstroke and 100-meter individual medley, third in the 100-meter backstroke, butterfly and 200-meter IM, fourth in the

50-yard freestyle, fifth in the 200-yard freestyle and sixth in the 50-yard breaststro­ke. Kaden Rodriguez placed sixth in the 50-yard backstroke.

In the 11 to 12 year old girls, Chloe Keeler placed fourth in the 200-yard IM and eighth in both the 100-yard breaststro­ke and 100-yard IM.

For the 11 to 12 year old boys, Cannon Ellis placed second in the 100-yard breaststro­ke and 200 IM, third in the

50-yard freestyle, sixth in the 100-yard backstroke and eighth in the 100-yard freestyle. Kile Rodriguez placed sixth in the 50-yard breaststro­ke, and Will Shafto placed fourth in the 100-yard IM and eighth in the 50-yard freestyle.

In the 13 and over girls, Camille Keeler placed third in the 100-yard freestyle, fourth in the 100-yard and 200yard breaststro­ke, fifth in the 200-yard IM, sixth in the 50-yard freestyle, 100yard butterfly and 200-yard backstroke and seventh in the 100-yard backstroke. Emma Campas placed sixth in the 100yard breaststro­ke and eighth in the

100-yard backstroke, and Addison Walls placed seventh in the 50-yard backstroke and 50-yard butterfly.

In the 13 and over boys, Caleb Ellis placed fifth in the 200-yard butterfly and seventh in both the 200 and 400 IMs while Elijah Johnston placed fifth in the 50-yard breaststro­ke and seventh in the 50-yard backstroke. Aidan Qualls took fifth in the 50-yard 200 IM, sixth in the 200-yard backstroke and 400 IM, eighth in the 100-yard backstroke, 200yard freestyle and 500-yard freestyle, and Ethan Smith placed second in the

200-yard butterfly and 400 IM, fourth in the 200-yard breaststro­ke and 500-yard freestyle, fifth in the 100-yard breaststro­ke, sixth in the 100-yard butterfly, seventh in the 100-yard backstroke and eighth in the 50-yard freestyle. Hunter Speas placed first in the 100-yard backstroke, 100-yard breaststro­ke, 200-yard freestyle and 400-yard IM.

At the Battle for the Belt in the 10 and under girls division, Gwen Burda took seventh in the 100-yard backstroke and 200-yard freestyle and eighth in the 50-yard breaststro­ke and 50-yard butterfly.

In the 10 and under boys, Roberts placed first in the 100-yard backstroke,

100-yard and 200-yard IMs, second in the 100-yard freestyle, 25-yard butterfly,

25-yard freestyle, 50-yard backstroke and 50-yard freestyle, third in the 25yard backstroke and 50-yard butterfly, fifth in the 50-yard breaststro­ke and sixth in the 100-yard breaststro­ke.

For the senior girls, Claire Hudnell placed seventh in the 500-yard freestyle and for the senior men, Zeke McCain placed eighth in the 500-yard freestyle.

National Park falls to ASU Mid-South

Both Nighthawk men’s and women’s teams suffered conference defeats against the Greyhounds Saturday. The women’s team fell 66-36 while the men’s team recorded a 105-83 loss.

The Lady Greyhounds held NPC scoreless in the first 7:11 of the game, garnering a 15-point lead. The Nighthawks trailed

21-4 after the first stanza, chipping away at the lead behind freshman Sierra Trotter for a 40-13 deficit at halftime.

Trotter and sophomore Imani Honey, from Mountain Pine, came alive in the third quarter for NPC with 5 points from Trotter and 9 second half points from Honey. Mid-South continued to work from behind the arc to keep the lead giving NPC its fourth conference loss.

Honey led NPC with 13 points and Trotter tallied 10.

The Nighthawk men managed to keep up with their opponent at the start of the game, rallying behind sophomores Joe Ramey and Kam Vick with 12 and 11 points, respective­ly, with work from the free throw line and inside the paint. However, the Greyhounds hit a 14-5 spurt with

3:04 left until intermssio­n as Mid-South garnered a 60-46 halftime lead.

NPC could not produce from the arc as the Nighthawks nailed only one 3-pointer in the last 20 minutes. Sophomore Jakilyn Kaiser led the comeback for the Nighthawks with 10 points in the second half while freshman JoQuarius Vale put up 8 points, but the Greyhounds executed with

3-point field goals as the Nighthawks fell in their third conference defeat.

Vick led NPC with 17 points, Ramey and Kaiser tallied 14 each, and Valrie added 12.

The NPC men and women travel to North Arkansas College today with the women’s game starting at 5 p.m.

GAC names women’s soccer players of the week

The Great American Conference named Oklahoma Baptist’s Tori Kitchel as offensive player of the week as Ouachita Baptist’s Hanna Thompson and Michele Snow clinched the defender and goalkeeper awards, respective­ly.

Kitchel made the game winning goal in the Bison’s victory over East Central Saturday. The Bison scored the last six goals of the matchup as Kitchel had assists on teammates Kaylee Swaner’s and Madison Morgan’s goals in the second half.

Thompson played the entire 90 minutes in OBU’s game against Southweste­rn Oklahoma and scored the the game-winning goal with 35 seconds left in the game for a 2-1 win. Thompson was vital from OBU’s back line as the Tigers limited SWOSU to one shot — a penalty kick.

Snow garnered the victory for OBU as the one goal she conceeded was the Bulldogs’ penalty kick in the 61st minute. This is the first time that OBU has grabbed a win over SWOSU since October 2015.

OBU forward Ashlyn Heckman was also nominated.

GAC men’s soccer players of the week

The GAC named Newman’s Ignacio Lerech as offensive player of the week as Fort Hays State’s Jonathan Gammelvind and Kieran Brown nabbed the defender and goalkeeper accolades, respective­ly.

In Newman’s 5-1 win over Harding, Lerech became the third player to collect at least four goals when he accounted for four of the goals in the victory. All four goals were scored in a span of 24 minutes.

During Fort Hays State 3-0 win over OBU, Gammelvind collected his first assist of his collegiate career. The Tigers limited OBU to only seven shots, five on frame.

Brown claimed the award after receiving the honor last week as he collected his second shutout, making five saves in the win over OBU — a career high. His career goals-against average lowered to 0.88.

Fort Hays State middle fielder Kevin Black was considered for offensive player while Newman defender Luke Mills was considered for the defender honor and Newman goalkeeper Jean Claude Consol was nominated for the goalkeeper award.

GAC names volleyball players of the week

The GAC named SWOSU’s Chezney Nielsen and Allie Hoang as offensive player and setter of the week, respective­ly, while Oklahoma Baptist’s Taneyah Brown earned the defensive player accolade.

Nielsen was key in victories over East Central and Southern Nazarene, leading the Bulldogs with 3.75 kills and 3.94 points per set. She also added 23 digs and picked up two double-doubles while hitting .400 in the win over Southern Nazarene and tallying 17 kills against East Central.

Brown recorded 12 block assists in Oklahoma Baptist’s win over Northweste­rn Oklahoma State as the Lady Bison maintained an undefeated season. The team as a whole garnered 22 blocks and Brown added 10 kills, seven digs and an ace as she led the team with 17.0 points.

Hoang dished out 39 assists in SWOSU’s win over Southern Nazarene while averaging 10.5 assists each set in the win in addition to the one against East Central. Against the Tigers, she also added 45 assists, 10 digs, seven kills and four aces.

Arkansas-Monticello rightside hitter Mikaela Brown, OBU outside hitter EJ Day, East Central outside hitter Darcie Kaiser, Henderson State outside hitter Violeta Mendoza Quintana and Harding outside hitter Logan Smith were also nominated for offensive player. For defensive player, OBU libero Lexie Castillo, Harding defensive specialist Katherine Cowart, East Central defensive specialist Thalianett­e Garcia, Arkansas Tech defensive specialist Madison Grantham and UAM defensive specialist Katelyn Richbourg were also considered. For the setter accolade, OBU’s Kellen Church, Arkansas Tech Brianna Merkel and Harding’s Sarah Morehead were considered.
