Schmitt sets personal bests at recent meet

Aubrey Schmitt, an 11-year old fifth grader from Lake Hamilton, recently competed in the Arkansas 14 & Under Age Group Championsh­ips in the 11 to 12 year old age division at The River Center in Benton. Schmitt is part of the Central Arkansas Racers.

Schmitt placed third in the 200-yard butterfly, fourth place in the 200-yard Individual Medley and the 500-yard freestyle, sixth place in the 200-yard breast stroke and 100-yard breast stroke, seventh place in the 100-yard butterfly and eighth place in the 200-yard freestyle.

Schmitt finished with personal bests in the 500-yard freestyle, shaving off 4.81 seconds to clock in at 5:50.58; 200-yard freestyle, cutting off 4.99 seconds for a time of 2:12.26; 200-yard IM, trimming

0.47 seconds for 2:31.84; 200-yard butterfly, cutting down 0.28 seconds for 2:32.35; and shaving off 0.57 seconds in the 100yard butterfly for 1:07.60.

Schmitt broke five state records last year in the 1000-yard freestyle, two in the 400-yard IM and two in the 200-yard butterfly.

NIGHTHAWKS WIN WEEKEND SERIES AGAINST SAU TECH

The National Park softball team won two of three games against SAU Tech Saturday. The Nighthawks fell 9-1 in the first game but picked up wins of 9-7 and 11-10 with walk-off home runs.

After postponing last weekend’s second game due to darkness, the teams resumed play in the fourth inning with SAU Tech leading 7-1. Nighthawk sophomore Sarah Todd of Conway pitched two scoreless innings, permitting two runs in the bottom of the sixth to end the game via the sportsmans­hip rule.

In the first game of Saturday’s doublehead­er, Nighthawk freshman Baley Williams hit a two run walk off home run in the bottom of the seventh inning for the win. With a 7-4 deficit in the last inning, NPC picked up five runs in the seventh. Williams was 3-for-3 at the plate and drove in four runs while freshman pitcher Brooke Nalley allowed seven runs on nine hits and striking out four.

In the final game, NPC allowed four runs in the first four innings. The Nighthawks picked up three runs in the fourth and one in the sixth. NPC trailed 10-4 at the bottom of the seventh, but it gained momentum with four runs before a threerun shot by NPC freshman Madalynn Thompson propelled the Nighthawks to the win.

GAC MEN’S SOCCER PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

The Great American Conference named Southern Nazarene’s Nathanial Mederos as offensive player while Northeaste­rn State’s James Doyle captured defensive player and Roger State’s Dillon Dean nabbed goalkeeper.

Mederos picked up two scores in Southern Nazarene’s historic win over No. 13 Fort Hays State. Doyle knotted

the score with 10 minutes left in Northeaste­rn State’s match against Newman to record his third goal of the season, the Riverhawks capturing the win in the second minute of overtime. A vital part of Rogers State’s 4-2 victory over Ouachita Baptist with a pair of saves, Dean helped the Hillcats improve to a 3-0 record.

Fort Hays State forward Kevin Black and Newman midfielder Matthew Roberts were nominated for offensive player while Newman midfielder Asa Moncivais was considered for defender and Newman’s Jean Claude Consol for goalkeeper.

GAC VOLLEYBALL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

The GAC named Northweste­rn OklaNation­al

homa State’s Kaydee Honeycutt and Avery Osburg as offensive player and setter of the week, respective­ly, as Oklahoma Baptist’s Julia Brinton garnered the defensive player accolade.

Honeycutt led the Rangers in their 3-0 win over Southeaste­rn State, recording 15 kills with only a single error to hit .412. Brinton averaged 1.83 blocks per set against Southweste­rn State, with a total of seven in the Lady Bison’s Friday game and four in Tuesday’s 3-0 win. As NWOSU collected its fourth straight win over SEOSU, Osburg garnered her third 40-assist performanc­e along with seven digs, two blocks and an ace.

UAM right side hitter Mikaela Brown, East Central libero Thalianett­e Garcia and Oklahoma Baptist outside hitter Malia Leatherlan­d were considered for offensive player while OBU libero Lexie Castillow, East Central libero Alejandra Delgado and NWOSU libero Sydnee Miller were nominated for defensive player. Oklahoma Baptist’s Kaylee Buell and East Central’s Sydney Dungen were nominated for the setter accolade.

GAC WOMEN’S SOCCER PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

The GAC named SWOSU forward Brianna Benitez offensive player while Oklahoma Baptist defender Kimmy McKinney garnered the defender award and OBU’s Michele Snow repeated as goalkeeper of the week.

Benitez recorded an assist on all four of SWOSU’s goals in a complete sweep over Southern Nazarene Tuesday, matching Oklahoma State’s Jessica Lynch single-game record that was set against OBU on Oct. 23, 2014. McKinney was key in Oklahoma Baptist’s defense in the Bison’s 2-0 win against NWOSU, the defense only allowing two shots in the game. Snow picked up four saves in the 2-1 win Saturday over East Central and five saves against Harding Tuesday.

Oklahoma Baptist midfielder Hannah White was also nominated.
