The final virtual Old Time music program set to stream Tuesday

The third, and final, virtual introduction to Old Time music will stream on the Garland County Library’s Facebook page on Tuesday, and organizers say they look forward to bringing back live performances in the near future.

The Arkansas Highlands Folk Project was started by Charlie Moore to educate and preserve Old Time music — music from the 1930s and older. Prior to COVID-19, the project planned to hold three concerts showcasing this old form of music. When the pandemic restrictions on gatherings forced venues to close, Moore switched directions to create three virtual introductions to the genre.

“This will be our final virtual episode of introduction to traditional Old Time music,” Moore said. The second program focused on the history of Black performers on the genre. Moore said that this program will continue looking at that topic, and it will also talk about Cliff Top.

Cliff Top, the common name of the Appalachian String Band Music Festival, is the “Superbowl of Old Time music,” Moore said. It is a music festival that is held in West Virginia, and Moore said it attracts thousands of visitors. He said they will “show a little tour of that.”

Another feature from the last program Moore plans to bring back is clips from the PBS show “David Holt’s State of the Music.” He also said that they will show between 10 and

12 performances, depending on how much time they have.

Moore said that the first two virtual programs were successful, noting that “we have had more view these than can watch in the auditorium.”

However, “virtual will never take the place of live,” Moore said. “Hopefully we can begin planning some live programs.”

Moore said that it may take a few months for them to make a live show a reality. “We don’t know where it will be, but the library will be connected,” he said. “I would really love (to have a show) outdoors,” Moore said, but said that due to the weather it will be “more than likely in the library.”

“The library has just been terrific,” Moore said.
