A local man was arrested on a felony battery warrant Saturday night stemming from allegations he attacked his friend last month, beating him in the head with a stick until he required sutures.

Charles Edward Brinkley Jr., 57, of 615 Park Ave., was taken into cus- tody at his residence shortly after 8:30 p.m. on the felony warrant for second-degree battery, punishable by up to 10 years in prison.

Brinkley was being held on a $3,500 bond and was set to appear Monday in Garland County District Court.

According to the probable cause affidavit, on July 23, a local man, 60, said he and Brinkley, who he has been friends with for several years, got into an argument at Brinkley’s residence.

The victim alleges Brinkley pulled a large stick from his vehicle and hit him on the right leg, knocking him to the ground. Once there, Brinkley continued to hit him on the head and neck numerous times with the stick while also punching him.

The victim reportedly suffered injuries that required he be transported to the emergency room at CHI St. Vincent Hot Springs where he was treated for a swollen eye and lacerations to his head that required sutures to close.

On July 27, the victim told Hot Springs police it was Brinkley who had attacked him and a warrant for Brinkley’s arrest

was issued on July 31. On Saturday, police were responding to a disturbance call in the 600 block of Park Avenue and encountered Brinkley at the scene and took him into custody on the battery warrant.

According to court records, Brinkley was convicted in Saline County on March 14, 2007, on a felony count of nonsupport and was sentenced to five years in prison, with all of it suspended. On Jan. 19, 2012, in Lonoke County, he was convicted of possession of a firearm by certain persons and sentenced to six years’ supervised probation. On April 5, 2012, in Pulaski County, he was convicted of felony terroristic threatening and violation of a domestic order of protection and sentenced to five years’ supervised probation.
