Start year with help from the library

- Erin Baber Garland County Library

A quick Google search for common New Year’s resolutions brings up many versions of the following: exercise more, learn a new skill or hobby, save more money/spend less money, and live life to the fullest. Whether you have grand plans to live a healthier lifestyle, learn a new hobby, or to get organized, the library’s got you covered.

Your Garland County Library card connects you to more than just books, though we do have thousands of those, well into a million if you count our digital collections, even. The library has everything you need to make keeping your resolutions easier than ever.

We’ll tackle a few of these common resolutions to show you how the library can help.

The first, and seemingly most common resolution on many lists — exercise, lose weight, get in better shape. The library has hundreds of books and DVDS on nutrition, cooking, exercise, fitness, and other helpful subjects. Try exercising to an audiobook or some new music available to download and stream for free from Overdrive/libby or Hoopla Digital. And tune in to one of our frequent livestream presentations about different aspects of health which can be found on the library’s Facebook page and Youtube channel.

Next resolution — learn a new skill. This one is too easy. Besides the thousands of books about a vast variety of hobbies we have, we also provide free access to sites like Creativebug and Mango Languages. Creativebug is a paid website for art and craft video lessons. Your Garland County Library card grants you free access. Same with Mango Languages — you can learn up to 70 different languages with a free-to-you account.

Now that we’re healthier and have taken up a few new hobbies, it’s time to save more money and/ or spend less money. Using the public library for this one is obvious. Your library card is paid for with your annual property taxes. All you need to do is come and apply for a card and start using the library to the fullest — borrow actual books, download e-books, use the free educational resources, ditch Netflix and start using Hoopla. Opt in to our free delivery service and we’ll even save you on gas.

And finally, many resolutions lists included something about living more fully, or being less distracted, and so on. Besides having literal nonfiction books about living your best life, our library is a community hub. We connect you to materials, information, and services that promote learning and enjoyment for all ages.
