FDA approves two oral antivirals

- FROM STAFF REPORTS

Over the past week, the FDA has authorized two oral antivirals for the treatment of COVID-19 in certain patients.

Pfizer’s Paxlovid — nirmatrelvir tablets and ritonavir tablets, co-packaged for oral use — is authorized for the treatment of mild-to-moderate COVID-19 in adults and pediatric patients, 12 years of age and older weighing at least 88 pounds with positive results of direct SARSCoV-2 testing, and who are at high risk for progression to severe COVID-19, including hospitalization or death, according to the FDA’s website.

Merck’s molnupiravir is authorized for the treatment of mild-to-moderate COVID-19 in adults with positive results of direct SARS-CoV-2 viral testing, and who are at high risk for progression to severe COVID-19, including hospitalization or death, and for whom alternative COVID-19 treatment options authorized by the FDA are not accessible or clinically appropriate, according to the website.

Both treatments are available by prescription only and should be initiated as soon as possible after diagnosis of COVID-19 and within five days of symptom onset.
