Quick start leads Lakeside past MSM

- KRISHNAN COLLINS

Lakeside started quickly and never gave up its lead in the Lady Rams’ 50-28 win over Mount St. Mary in the Chartwell’s Holiday Classic at Lakeside Athletic Complex Wednesday.

The Lady Rams started the game on a 12-0 run that was capped off by a Sarah Porter 3-pointer after Amelia Rogers drove in the paint and kicked it out to the senior.

Lakeside (6-4) suffered a 5638 loss to Benton in the first day of the classic on Tuesday, and head coach Jay Williams said his team came out with a lot of energy looking to make amends for the loss to the Lady Panthers.

“It definitely was needed,” he said. “A win was needed today.

We kind of fell short (Tuesday). We didn’t come out with a lot of energy or the effort that was needed. Today we came in with a different mindset, came out with tons of energy and just the will to win the game and win the game convincingly.”

Williams said his team watched film from the Benton game before playing the Belles (4-8), and the Lady Rams realized they did not give it their best shot and got embarrassed on their home court.

“We wanted to have a little bit of redemption,” Williams said. “I think we got it done today. We’ve just got to look forward to Nashville.”

The Lady Rams took an 18-3 lead into the second quarter, but Mount St. Mary started to get back into the game as Lakeside picked up multiple fouls. The

Belles made 11 free throws in the second quarter including nine free throws from Millie Allgood.

Mount St. Mary brought the deficit within eight points at 2921 after Allgood bullied past defenders in the paint for a layup.

However, two good plays from Mady Davenport extended Lakeside’s lead again. First, the senior found Porter with a great pass for an easy layup and 31-21 edge. Then, Davenport registered a steal and finished the move herself for a 33-21 advantage.

Lakeside cleaned up its fouling in the third quarter, and Davenport continued her stellar performance. The senior grabbed an offensive rebound before being fouled hard on the putback. She made the and-one free throw to jump ahead 38-23.

Moments later Rogers found Davenport with a good look that sent the senior back to the free throw line. She knocked down both her shots for a 40-23 edge.

The teams went into the fourth quarter with the game essentially out of Mount St. Mary’s reach at a 45-23 scoreline.

“We stopped fouling,” Williams said about the big third quarter. “When you’re young you have to learn how the refs are calling the game, and we’re still learning how to do that. So that was actually good for us to go through that type of experience.”

Porter led Lakeside with 15 points and Davenport scored nine for the Lady Rams. Williams emphasized the impact Porter had on the game.

“She’s one of a kind, man,” he said. “I’m loving the way she’s coming on this year. She’s a senior. She has great leadership, and she wants it this year. That’s what we want from all of our girls. We want our girls to actually want it and give ourselves a chance to do something special this year.”

Allgood led Mount St. Mary with 15 points, 11 of which came from the free throw line. The Lady Rams struggled to control their fouling for part of the contest but overcame that challenge to see out the win.

“We may run into some things that we ran into today where refs are kind of calling it tight,” Williams said. “As long as we keep learning off of that and building, we’ll be OK this season. We played good. I’m happy.”

MAUMELLE CHARTER 57, LAKESIDE JV 13

Maumelle Charter made 10 3-pointers in the Lady Falcons’ win over Lakeside’s junior varsity team in the Chartwell’s Holiday Classic at Lakeside Athletic Complex Wednesday.

Neither team scored until 2:12 had elapsed off the first quarter clock. Maumelle Charter’s Olivia Stevens opened the scoring with a 3-pointer while getting fouled, making the ensuing free throw for an early 4-0 lead.

The Lady Falcons led 12-5 after the game’s first eight minutes, and Maumelle Charter added three more treys in the second quarter to go into the break with a 29-6 lead.

“Our best quality is our shooting,” Maumelle Charter head coach Logan Dahlke said. “We work on it everyday, and we like shooting the three. We like to take around 25 to 30 3-pointers a game.”

Stevens opened the third quarter with her fourth 3-pointer of the game and then added a layup in transition with an andone for a 34-9 edge.

The Lady Falcons outscored Lakeside 15-2 in the third quarter and forced the Lady Rams into multiple turnovers. Maumelle Charter ended the quarter with a buzzer beater from Emma Stewart to go into the fourth quarter ahead 41-11.

“A lot of it is our man-to-man defense,” Dahlke said. “We try to put pressure on the ball when we can. My senior guard (Kathryn High) does a really good job putting pressure on the ball way up past half court, and I think that was the difference today.”

The Lady Falcons limited Lakeside to just two points once again in the fourth quarter, and Maumelle Charter added 16 points in the final eight minutes of the contest.

Stevens led the Lady Falcons with 19 points, High tallied 16 points and Jordan Bures scored 10 points for Maumelle Charter.

Brooklyn Ussery led Lakeside with eight points, and Molly Reeves scored the Lady Rams’ other five points.

“We played hard,” Dahlke said. “We played hard the whole game. We finally put four quarters together.”
